Fortunately, the transfer portal doesn't just take.
Oklahoma has added 14 players so far from the transfer portal since it officially opened on Dec. 9. Those additions are compared to the 27 former Sooners who have left Norman through the transfer portal. However, most of those losses were from Brent Venables preparing for looming roster limits and cutting ties with those who weren't contributing much, if at all.
Here's a look at the players joining the Sooners from the transfer portal.
Jacob Ulrich, P, Kennesaw State
Venables & Co. didn't immediately start landing commitments from the portal, so Sooner Nation wasn't exactly thrilled when the first addition (finally) was a punter from a lackluster proram.
Ulrich was an underrated addition, though, from a position that usually goes overlooked. And the fact he came from a, well, terrible football team, actually is a plus.
As a freshman this season, Ulrich was second in FBS in punt attempts and first in punting yards while averaging 46 yards an attempt.
Luke Baklenko, OL, Stanford
Baklenko was the first addition at a position group OU was desperate for help at.
He brings over 1,000 snaps worth of experience at right tackle from Stanford, competing in two different Power Four conferences between the Pac-12 and ACC.
Baklenko has two years of eligibility left.
Javonnie Gibson, WR, Arkansas-Pine Bluff
As six receivers had already left OU, Gibson was the first at the position to join.
Gibson broke out this season with 70 receptions, 1,215 receiving yards and nine TDs at the FCS level. He brings needed size at receiver for OU, listed at 6-foot-3. He will have two years of eligibility left.
Keontez Lewis, WR, Southern Illinois
Listed at 6-foot-2, Lewis was another receiver with some size added to the mix.
Oklahoma will be Lewis' fourth stop after starting his career at UCLA for a year, spending two seasons with Wisconson, then playing at Southern Illinois this season. He's coming off his best season with Southern Illinois, though, recording 49 catches, 790 yards and five TDs.
John Mateer, QB, Washington State
Mateer was the No. 1 player available in the transfer portal according to every major recruiting service. He threw for 3,139 yards and 29 TDs compared to seven INTs this season. He's also a dangerous runner, rushing for 826 yards and 15 scores.
Mateer's 44 total TDs was the most by any player in the country this season.

Brian Bosworth compared Oklahoma QB John Mateer to legendary running back
Derek Simmons, OL, Western Carolina
And now to make sure Mateer is protected.
Simmons started three seaons at the FCS between Western Carolina and Abilene Christian. He has SEC size, though, at 6-foot-6 and 325 pounds. Rivals ranked Simmons as the No. 29 overall player available in the transfer portal.
Simmons will instantly be in the mix somewhere on OU's offensive line with one year of eligibility left.
Isaiah Satenga, WR, Arkansas
Another receiver, but this time one that can return, too.
In his career, Satenga has 54 receptions, 632 receiving yards and three TDs after three seasons with Arkansas. He also returned 15 punts for 180 yards and took one back for a score, and returned 23 kickoffs for 500 yards in 2023.
Carson Kent, TE, Kennesaw State
With one tight end already headed elsewhere, Joe Jon Finley added another to his group.
Kent, a redshirt sophomore, committed to OU with two years of eligibilty left. He's been in Kennesaw State's starting lineup the past two years. This season, he had 18 catches, 217 receiving yards and three TDs.
Cole Gonzales, QB, Western Carolina
OU got the gift of depth at quarterback on Christmas Day.
Gonzales committed to the Sooners with one year of eligibility left but can also still redshirt. He also creates the option of Hawkins redshirting next year while Gonzales backs up Mateer next season if OU goes that route.
Gonzales has a ton of experience at the FCS level after starting two seasons for Western Carolina. In his career he has 63.6 completition percentagen 6,682 passing yards and 51 TDs compared to 22 interceptions. He can also run a bit with 212 rushing yards and a pair of TDs this season.
Will Huggins, TE, Pittsburg State
Joe Jon Finley added another tight end to his position group but it was another underwhelming addition.
Will Huggins committed from Division-II Pittsburg State as a graduate transfer. He defintely has SEC size at 6-foot-7 and 250 pounds. Huggins caught 22 passes for 395 yards and a TD this season while earning First-Team All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association honors.
This is actually Huggins' second signing of the offseason. He initially signed with Washington State and apparently really wants to catch passes from John Mateer after making the same move.
Josiah Martin, WR, California
Martin was OU's fourth receiver commitment out of the transfer portal and still has three years of eligibility left as just a freshman.
In seven games as a freshman, Martin had 12 receptions and 112 receiving yards. He also scored on a 29-yard run in the LA Bowl against No. 24 UNLV.
Austin Welch, K, Kennesaw State
The Kennesaw State to Oklahoma pipeline continued with Austin Welch.
In his only season with the Owls, Welch was 12-for-14 on field-goal attempts and also had kickoff duties. He started his career at Eastern Kentucky and will have one year of eligibility left.
Marvin Jones Jr., Edge, Florida State
Marvin Jones Jr. was OU's first defensive addition and should immediately crack the starting lineup at defensive end next season.
Jones has size at 6-foot-5 and experience from stops at Georgia and Florida State. He's also the son of former NFL and All-American linebacker Marvin Jones Sr., who is now the head coach of the Tulsa Oilers of the Indoor Football League.
Kendal Daniels, S/LB, Oklahoma State
Originially from Beggs, Oklahoma, Kendal Daniels chose to finish his career in the state after transferring to OU from Oklahoma State, where he was a three-year starter.
Daniels is versatile after starting his career at safety then moving down to linebacker this season because of his size and ability. He could also slide into OU's hybrid cheetah position.
John Locke, TE, Louisiana Tech
John Locke was the third tight end the Sooners added from the transfer portal.
Locke reportedly joined the program as a walk-on with two years of eligibility left. In two seasons at Louisiana Tech, Locke totaled three catches for 6 yards and scored one TD.
