Brian Bosworth compared Oklahoma QB John Mateer to legendary running back

Although Mateer is a quarterback, Bosworth compared him to a legendary running back.

Comparisons are guaranteed to be made when a new player arrives to a program, and although most are expected, some are definitely not.

Former Washington State quarterback John Mateer, who was the No. 1 prospect in the transfer portal, committed to Oklahoma on Wednesday. It was an expected move after his Wazzu offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle, took the same position at OU earlier this month.

Since it was expected, people around Norman were already talking about Mateer, even when while he was still technically practicing with the Cougars. Mateer then officially entered the transfer portal on Monday, a week after it officially opened, and that day legendary OU linebacker Brian Bosworth was a guest on local station KREF, The Ref.

Mateer isn't just impressive as a passer, but also as a runner, rushing for 826 yards and 15 TDs this season. That led Bosworth to make a unique comparison.

"He's brave," Bosworth said. "He's brave in the pocket, and when wants to run and when he needs to run, he is fleet of feet, he is super athletic. He reminds me a little bit of Barry Sanders where he stops and goes lateral and it doesn't take much to get him to go vertical back down north and south with a lot of speed and excelleration. He's a dynamic quarterback."

Sanders is an NFL and College Football Hall of Famer. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1988 for Oklahoma State before becoming a two-time NFL MVP for the Detroit Lions as a running back.

Bosworth never faced Sanders as a Bedlam rival and injuries cut his NFL career short, but he's certainly familiar with the legendary running back. Bosworth also still keeps a close eye on the Sooners as an alum.

Another Sooner legend, Bob Stoops, is also featured on KREF and talked about Mateer that same day.

"I love what he does," Stoops said. "Gutsy guy. I've gotten to talk to Ben Arbuckle a couple times now and I was out at practice and visited with him for a little bit. If it works out it'd be incredible. He sure is impressive watching him."
