Oklahoma finally gained a wide receiver instead of lost one.
After losing six receivers so far to the transfer portal, the portal finally gave back to the Sooners. Multiple reports on Wednesday said that Arkansas-Pine Bluff receiver Javonnie Gibson committed to the Sooners.
Gibson is OU's third commitment from the transfer portal so far and second on offense, joining former Stanford offensive tackle Luke Baklenko.
A redshirt sophomore, Gibson will have two years of eligibility left. It took only one breakout season for him to be wanted by FBS programs, though.
Gibson had 70 receptions, 1,215 receiving yards and nine TDs this season at the FCS level. He averaged 17.4 yards a catch, which should help the Sooners after they averaged only 6.11 yards per passing attempt this season.
The Sooners are desperate for big-play makers and Gibson can be that even at the FBS level with the speed to blow the top off secondaries.
Gibson also has size with his speed, listed at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds. He would immediately become the second-tallest receiver on OU's current roster behind only Jayden Gibson.
After just one good season at the FCS level, Gibson already attracted the attention of multiple FBS programs. He also had reported offers from Oklahoma State, Mississippi State, SMU, Virginia Tech and Cincinnati.
247Sports ranked Gibson as the No. 35 wide receiver currently available in the transfer portal.
As a high schooler, Gibson had zero stars from 247Sports out of Opelousas High School in Louisiana. He originally signed with the Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils, then transferred to UAPB before the 2024 season, which is when he broke out after finally seeing the field.
With his size and speed, and considering the Sooners' massive need for talent at receiver, Gibson will likely immediately be in the rotation next season at OU.
