Let the hype begin.
John Mateer has been committed to Oklahoma for less than 24 hours and already has odds to win the Heisman Trophy in 2025.
Mateer committed to the Sooners on Wednesday evening as the No. 1 prospect in the transfer portal after a successful sophomore campaign as Washington State's quarterback this season. Mateer ultimately followed his offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle, who was hired as OU's OC on Dec. 2.
Between Mateer's numbers this season and the fact he's playing in the same system but in a better conference and surrounded by more talent, he's already getting preseason Heisman hype and the 2024 season isn't even over yet.
BetOnline on Thursday released updated odds for who could win the Heisman Trophy in 2025. Colorado wide receiver and cornerback Travis Hunter just won this year's award on Saturday.
Mateer had the third-best odds, according to BetOnline, to emerge as the best player in college football next year. Texas quarterback Arch Manning had the best odds at +600, followed by LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier at +700. Mateer's odds were +800.
After Mateer to finish the top five were Penn State QB Drew Allar (+900) and Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava (+1000).
Mateer led all of FBS with 44 total TDs this season because of his ability as both a passer and runner. He threw for 3,139 yards and 29 TDs while completing 64.9% of his passes. Both of his passing stats were in the top 16 in the country, with his passing TD total at No. 9. He also rushed for 826 yards and 15 scores.
Mateer would be the Sooners' seventh Heisman Trophy winner and fifth quarterback to win the award. The last two players to win the award for OU -- Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray -- were also quarterbacks who transferred to Norman. Jalen Hurts was also a Heisman runner-up in 2019 after transferring from Alabama.
