The Oklahoma Sooners seemed to have been stuck in idle right at the finish line in the race for prized 2027 four-star edge rusher Uhila Wolfgramm, and the BYU Cougars eventually stormed across to win the in-state prospect.
Wolfgramm announced his commitment to in-state BYU on Thursday in a race that the Sooners once had a comfortable lead in before it became neck and neck at the end. The truth is, though, Wolfgramm handled his recruitment in the way he should had to assure he made the best decision for himself, even if that didn't include becoming a Sooner. And Wolfgramm's decision wasn't really known until the moment he announced.

Sooners were one step away before BYU stole Uhila Wolfgramm and squandered Utah pipeline
The Sooners were the first to host Wolfgramm this summer during his schedule of official visits that also included Cal, Utah and BYU. After his trip to Norman, he admitted to 247Sports' Blair Angulo that he almost pledged to the Sooners right then. By that point, multiple recruiting experts had also predicted Wolfgramm to eventually commit to Oklahoma.
Still, Wolfgramm proceeded with his original plans and took all of his official visits. The longer he was away from Oklahoma, though, the more worry grew that his commitment no longer was a for-sure thing, especially after he made his final stop at BYU.
That's when reports started to surface that his recruitment was actually completely up in the air between OU and BYU. Multiple recruiting insiders referred to Wolfgramm's recruitment as one of the closest of the 2027 cycle. Ultimately, staying home in Utah trumped the opportunity to play SEC football in Oklahoma. Had he committed early, Wolfgramm likely would have been a late flip or a future transfer.
Wolfgramm's recruitment had just recently exploded, which is also when the Sooners got in the mix late in April before hosting him for an unofficial visit just a few weeks later. His other offers included in-state Utah, Cal, UCLA, Kansas State, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma State and more.
According to the 247Sports Composite, Wolfgramm, listed at 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds, is the No. 20 edge rusher in the 2027 class out of Maple Mountain High School. He's also the No. 2 prospect in the state of Utah, per 247Sports. Had he committed, Wolfgramm would have joined fellow Utah natives four-star athlete Bode Sparrow and four-star edge rusher Krew Jones in the class, which would have given the Sooners the top three players from the Beehive State.
The Sooners still have a pair of edge rushers already committed, including Jones and three-star Samuel Nelson from Arkansas. Don't be surprised if they start head hunting to flip a prospect at the position closer to the Early Signing Period.

The stunning decision from Wolfgramm was also the second recruiting battle the Sooners lost this week. Just the day before on Wednesday, four-star cornerback Brandon Sherrard chose Red Rival Texas over OU and LSU. This now makes the Sooners 0-for-2 so far on their final three big targets in the class. The last hope is three-star safety Jaiden Fields, who will announce his decision next week.
