Brandon Sherrard was likely going to play in the Red River Rivalry one way or another -- he just had to choose which side of the 50-yard line he'd represent.
Ultimately, the Oklahoma Sooners couldn't lure Sherrard, a 2027 four-star cornerback, across the Red River as he announced his commitment to the Texas Longhorns live on Wednesday. He had narrowed his options to in-state Texas, OU and LSU before making his decision during Rivals' "Summer Signing Day."
According to the 247Sports Composite, Sherrard is the No. 18 corner in the 2027 class and the No. 157 overall player. He's also the No. 22 prospect in the state of Texas out of Shadow Creek High School. Last season, he tallied 22 tackles, a tackle for loss, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and forced a fumble in just seven games before a shoulder injury ended the rest of his junior campaign.
Sherrard also drew offers from Arkansas, Florida State, Kansas State, Kentucky, Miami, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Penn State, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt and more.
The Sooners actually entered the mix for Sherrard late before quickly making up a lot of ground to even get to the point of having a chance at landing him. They were his most recent reported offer on May 6. By May 29, Oklahoma already had him on campus for an official visit and he canceled a trip to Texas A&M to be in Norman. He also visited Penn State, LSU and Texas.
Had Oklahoma not started from behind, there's reason to believe Sherrard would have been a Sooner considering how close they already were, even with everyone else getting a headstart.

Brandon Sherrard chooses wrong side of Red River Rivalry with no real harm to the Sooners
Regardless, Sherrard would have just been an unexpected bonus for a loaded 2027 class that's especially stacked at his position. The Sooners already have Gabriel Osborne Jr., who's the No. 5 corner in the country and the best commit they have based on 247Sports' ratings. 247Sports just recently upgraded Osborne to five-star status and as the top prospect in the state of Oklahoma.
Four-star Mikhail McCreary, the No. 34 CB, three-star Mikyal Davis (56) and three-star Trenton Blaylock (63) are also part of the class. Sherrard would have given the Sooners five corners in the same class and likely forced one of those other commits out.
The Sooners still have two more opportunities coming up to add to their 2027 class. Four-star edge rusher Uhila Wolfgramm is down to either OU and BYU and is expected to make his decision as soon as Wednesday. Four-star athlete Jaiden Fields is also predicted to choose the Sooners and will announce his decision next week.
