The Oklahoma Sooners didn't land another commit, but they do all of a sudden have a new top player in their 2027 recruiting class, at least according to one major recruiting outlet.

247Sports on Wednesday released a new ranking of the top 32 players in the 2027 class, which earns prospects five-star status based on being projected future first-round NFL Draft picks. The upgrade promoted recent OU cornerback commit Gabriel Osborne Jr. from four stars to five-star status as the No. 16 overall player in the country. He was previously considered the No. 34 prospect in the class.

Gabriel Osborne Jr. gets massive upgrade to join Kaeden Penny in elite status

Gabriel just committed to the Sooners last week after visiting Norman the weekend before during OU's ChampU BBQ recruiting event. He chose the Sooners over other offers from Alabama, Arizona State, Florida State, Kansas State, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and more.

Rivals still has Gabriel as a four-star recruit and the No. 35 player in the class. According to the 247Sports Composite, which compiles all industry rankings, Gabriel is the No. 5 cornerback in the country and best player in the state of Oklahoma out of Mustang High School.

Gabriel was joined by fellow Oklahoman and OU commit Kaeden Penny, from Bixby High School, on the list of 32 five-star prospects. 247Sports ranked Penny as the No. 25 player in the class and the second-best interior offensive line. He had gotten his fifth star back in October.

Offensive tackle Cooper Hackett, from in-state Fort Gibson High School, has five-star status by Rivals but did not make the cut for 247Sports this time. Because of surgery that will force him to miss his senior season, Hackett likely won't move up recruiting rankings before signing in December.

Those three, based on every recruiting ranking in some order, are the 1-2-3 prospects in the state.

Those three homegrown products have boosted the Sooners into having the No. 3 2027 recruiting class in college football after the recent update. Based on 247Sports' ratings, Oklahomans make up three of the Sooners' top five commits, with Osborne at the top, followed by Penny at No. 2 and Hackett at No. 5. The other two are tight end Seneca Driver and linebacker Cooper Witten, the son of NFL great and OU tight ends coach Jason Witten. It's the first time the state of Oklahoma has ever produced three top-50 prospects in the same recruiting class.
