It took the Oklahoma Sooners -- with some help from the Liberty Flames -- just one weekend to prove the NCAA wrong.
A week after the NCAA selection committee snubbed the Sooners and handed the Texas A&M Aggies the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Softball Championship over OU, the Aggies turned out to be the worst top seed ever.
The Liberty Flames on Sunday night took out the Aggies 6-5 in Game 7 of the College Station Regional to make Super Regionals as a 2-seed from the regional. Texas A&M became the first top overall seed ever to be eliminated in its own regional since seeding started 20 years ago in 2005.

Meanwhile, the No. 2 overall seed Sooners completely annihilated their Norman Regional competition like a top seed should and will play No. 15 overall seed Alabama in Super Regionals this weekend. In three games over the weekend, OU outscored its opponents 31-3 and no team went beyond five innings as the Sooners secured a run-rule victory every outing.
After hammering Saint Francis 18-0 in the first game, the Aggies lost to Liberty 8-5 the next day to drop to the loser's bracket. Texas A&M beat Marist 17-4, then took the first game on Sunday against Liberty, 14-11, to force the "if necessary" Game 7.
The Aggies were ultimately rewarded the top seed thanks to a higher RPI ranking and a debacle by the SEC forced things to be decided that way instead of on the field. The Sooners and Texas A&M were set to clash in the finals of the SEC Softball Tournament last weekend, but SEC commissioner Greg Sankey made the decision to cancel the title game and deem the teams co-champions instead of trying to play the game later that day or early the next.
It was assumed the Sooners would then get the top seed as SEC regular-season champions and the 1-seed of the SEC tournament, which earned them the automatic bid from the SEC in the eyes of the NCAA. Instead, the NCAA favored the Aggies.
OU head coach Patty Gasso said she believed the committee got things right, and it was presumed everything would get sorted out anyway at the Women's College World Series, and by that point, seeding wouldn't really matter since OU still got hosting rights all the way through.
However, the NCAA's decision was proven wrong even earlier than expected, and the No. 1 Aggies won't even make it to the WCWS to decide things on the field against the Sooners. And after just one test, the Sooners are already in their rightful spot as the top seed of the NCAA softball tournament.
