The Sooners aren't in the clear just yet.

The transfer portal's initial closing date was Saturday, but that wasn't the case for every program, including Oklahoma.

For teams competing in later bowl games and the College Football Playoff, their players can still submit their paperwork to officially enter the transfer portal up to five days after their bowl or last playoff game. However, a player must actually participate in that event to get those extra days to file everything.

That means the portal won't be closed for everyone until late Jan. 25, five days after the national championship game.

For the Sooners, their players can still submit paperwork to enter the transfer portal until 11:59 p.m. CT Wednesday, which will be five days after their 21-20 loss to Navy in the Armed Forces Bowl on Friday.

But even if players submit everything then, that doesn't mean their name will immediately be entered into the transfer portal. We could still be hearing about names popping up for a few days after. Once a university gets a player's paperwork, that university then has 48 hours to officially enter that player into the transfer portal.

What this means for OU is that defensive coordinator Zac Alley's departure could still influence more defensive players to leave. However, Alley leaving does not open up a longer window for the Sooners. Programs get a 30-day window only if a head coach leaves or is fired.

This also isn't the only transfer window OU will have to endure before the 2025 season kicks off. The transfer portal will open again in the spring on April 16 and close on April 25.

So far, the Sooners have lost 26 players to the transfer portal, including seven defenders and 19 from the offensive side of the ball. OU has also added 10 players so far from the transfer portal.
