What happened during the dramatic David Stone saga over Easter Weekend at Oklahoma

It was an emotional weekend for Sooner Nation.

On Friday, it seemed like he was gone for good, then on Easter Sunday, he was back.

The news broke Friday evening that five-star defensive tackle David Stone would enter the transfer portal and leave Oklahoma after just one season, during which he played in every game as a freshman.

By the end of the day Sunday, though, Stone announced he removed his name from the portal and would be back for the Sooners' 2025 season.

It was a dramatic Easter Weekend filled with emotions, some regrettable things said by some and, ultimately, an ending that made the chaotic weekend irrelevant.

Since it was such a busy weekend, here's how everything went down during the David Stone saga.

Former 5-star Sooners DT David Stone withdraws from transfer portal

Tuesday: This did not seem like anything noteworthy at the time, but on Tuesday, the day before the transfer portal officially opened for the spring, Stone posted on X a picture from when he publicly made his college decision out of high school.

There wasn't much thought put into the post at the time, but by Friday evening, it seemed like it might have been Stone subtly foreshadowing what was ahead.

Wednesday: The transfer portal officially opened at the strike of midnight on Wednesday. It's open only for a short time until Friday.

Before Friday, everyone OU had lost seemed like it was a decision made by OU, not the players, to help trim down the roster for more talent and the looming 105-player roster limit. None of the six former Sooners in the portal during this spring played much, if at all, during their time at OU.

Friday: After a calm transfer portal weekend for Sooner Nation that included only two additions and no major blows, Easter Weekend then started with a bombshell Friday evening.

Pete Nakos of On3 initially broke the news that Stone would enter the transfer portal with three years of eligibility left. And that's when the chaos ensued.

Post-decision: Emotions got the best of some because of the news, and rumors immediately started being thrown around on social media throughout Friday night and Saturday. The most common speculation was that Stone entered the transfer portal because he wanted a bigger NIL deal after apparently taking a recent pay cut.

Stone subtly responded to those assumptions by resharing a post from before he committed in high school:

There were also the stands that Stone wouldn't be missed, no matter his hype, because he had just six tackles last season and will likely be the No. 4 defensive tackle on the depth chart this season. But there were also those who still stood behind Stone, no matter where he went.

There were also those hoping, or maybe even knowing of, a possible return.

Travis either has a great source, or needs to buy a lottery ticket.

And there were plenty of other hot takes and wild assumptions out there as Sooner Nation split to either support Stone or bid good riddance.

Sunday: As everyone was finishing up hunting eggs, there were some initial reports before Stone confirmed Sunday evening he removed his name from the transfer portal and will return for the 2025 season.

Sooner Nation then (mostly) rejoiced and even made amends for some words that were typed while Stone was in the transfer portal.

Now, it's in the past. Stone is still a Sooner whether you agree or not, and he should contribute in a major way this season. There wasn't an actual addition made, but this is still a recruiting win for OU general manager Jim Nagy and the Sooners.

And, finally, after Friday, we don't have to deal with transfer portal drama anymore, at least not until December.
