The Oklahoma Sooners’ lone commitment to their 2028 recruiting class so far could actually help fill the final hole in their 2027 class that’s nearly complete.
Four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri pledged to the Sooners last week as their first 2028 addition that hopefully actually sticks after running back Micah Rhodes had already been committed before eventually changing his mind. Tagliaferri got things started for the 2028 group, and SoonerScoop’s Parker Thune pointed out that Tagliaferri could also help put a bow on the 2027 class thanks to a connection with some teammates at Bergen Catholic High School up in New Jersey that the Sooners could flip to be their newest wide receiver commit.

The #Sooners landed blue-chip 2028 QB Trey Tagliaferri last week... and they still have an open spot for a 2027 wideout.

Tagliaferri just so happens to have two receivers at his high school that could fit the bill as flip targets for Oklahoma.

Trey Tagliaferri can give Sooners advantage to flip Bryan Porter or Austin Busso
The Sooners within the blink of an eye had two receivers flip from their class when four-star Demare Dezeurn and three-star Tra’Von Hall decommitted within hours of each other on the same Saturday in early June. Dezeurn decided to stay in his home state to play for Cal, while Hall could no longer resist newfound attention and will now be an Ole Miss Rebel.
That put the Sooners in an all-too-familiar situation that general manager Jim Nagy also had to navigate while assembling the 2026 class. OU still had just one receiver committed with the Early Signing Period looming before Nagy flipped a pair of receivers in the final weeks to get the Sooners what they needed last year.
Now, Nagy has more time to fill the void and has just one left to take care of after landing a commitment from three-star receiver Malahn Green about three weeks ago. Green joined four-star athlete Greydon Howell, from Broken Bow High School (OK), to give Oklahoma a pair of 2027 receiver commits but still preferring one more.

Enter Tagliaferri to hopefully help fill that last spot. His top receivers, Bryan Porter and Austin Busso, are both three-star 2027 prospects already committed elsewhere (for now). Porter just pledged to Georgia Tech last month and Busso has been committed to South Florida since May.
Busso, despite headed to the Group of Six ranks right now, has recently drawn more interest from Power Four programs, particularly in the SEC. Since March, he’s added offers from Tennessee and Ole Miss. Busso really had very little interest until a breakout junior campaign last season.
Last season, with Tagliaferri throwing his way for the first time, Busso caught 41 passes for 901 yards and 11 touchdowns. According to the 247Sports Composite, Busso, listed at 6-foot-1, is the No. 139 receiver in the 2027 class, but he'll likely climb further up the ranks by the time he signs.
🚨Busso's a BULL!🚨

Congratulations to Bergen Catholic WR Austin Busso on his commitment to South Florida. Busso was Trey Tagliaferri's top target last year with 41 catches for 901 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Porter, listed at 6-foot, got on recruiting radars sooner as the No. 99 WR in the class and even already has an offer from OU on the table. He had 590 receiving yards and eight TDs last season. He's the brother of Quincy Porter, who signed with Ohio State in 2025 as a five-star recruit.
Although the offer has already been extended, the Sooners bringing in Porter's high school QB has to be worth giving Oklahoma a second look. And if the Sooners decide to also dish an offer to Porter, it's certainly an upgrade from South Florida and is even more enticing already having chemistry with possibly his future college QB.
