This is your reminder that when it comes to recruiting for Oklahoma and Brent Venables, anything can happen at any moment. In late June, four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri committed to Notre Dame, but his verbal pledge was good for only six days. Once he shockingly decommitted, predictions came in for Oklahoma to pull a fast one on Marcus Freeman and get things done. It just did.
Hayes Fawcett did what he does best in providing breaking news, with Tagliaferri shutting down his recruitment once again, this time picking Oklahoma. Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle gets a major assist here, as he was running point for the Sooners in going after the young QB. Yup, Venables must be jacked up over this pledge for the 2028 class:

4-star QB Trey Tagliaferri officially flipped from Notre Dame to Oklahoma
For a little while, it seemed like Brady Quinn, who is not related to the legendary Notre Dame QB with the same name, was going to be Venables' signal-call for the '28 haul. However, things happened quickly here with Tagliaferri, and despite him originally announcing for Notre Dame, he's SEC-bound to play his college ball at Oklahoma instead.
Tagliaferri checks in at 6-1, 190 pounds, and he's a stud playmaker for Bergen Catholic in New Jersey. Bergen Catholic is one of the best programs in NJ, consistently producing elite talent every season. Tagliaferri is one of many top prospects out of BC for 2028, while New Jersey as a whole is stacked with future college studs.
Despite getting ready to enter his junior season, Tagliaferri picked up 34 offers throughout his recruitment. According to the 247Sports Composite, the Garden State product is ranked four stars, the No. 14 quarterback in the country, No. 9 player out of New Jersey, and No. 205 prospect nationally overall.
In addition to Oklahoma and Notre Dame, Tagliaferri also had offers from Alabama, Auburn, Indiana, Georgia, Kentucky, Notre Carolina, Ohio State, and many others. This past season for Bergen Catholic, Tagliaferri was sensational throwing the ball all over the field, tossing for 2,235 yards and 29 touchdowns, with only three interceptions.
This upcoming season, Tagliaferri will be motivated to lead his high school team to a state title, as Bergen Catholic lost to Don Bosco Prep in the state semifinals in 2025. Will he end up topping the sensational stats he put up as a sophomore? That's something Oklahoma fans will be following closely, but for now, Venables and Co. can celebrate this massive win, as Tagliaferri is commit No. 1 for '28.
