The Oklahoma Sooners' 4-0 start not only has them climbing up national rankings, but also recruiting rankings.
Although still extremely early in the process, based on the 247Sports Composite, the Sooners have the No. 1 2027 recruiting class in the country after landing four-star cornerback Mikhail McCreary on Monday morning. That fifth addition to the class catapulted OU over Penn State and Miami from the No. 3 spot.
Sooners have No. 1 recruiting class after hot start
The Sooners had assembled a rather lackluster 2026 class, at least based on recruiting ratings. That 2026 group is still outside the top 20 in the 247Sports Composite team rankings, but OU's hot start to the season could soon benefit that class, too, because winning seems to solve all problems.
While starting 4-0 to show things have turned around in Oklahoma under Brent Venables, who has cooled his hot seat, the Sooners have reasserted dominance on the recruiting trail in the first class that general manager Jim Nagy has had his hand in since the beginning.
The Sooners have added four 2027 commitments during the month of September, and all were in Norman for OU's early win over Michigan on Sept. 6. Just three days after that top-25 win, four-star wide receiver Demare Dezeurn committed to the Sooners.
Top in-state recruits Cooper Hackett and Kaeden Penny, both offensive linemen, then returned to Norman on Sept. 20 for the Sooners' SEC opener against Auburn. Both eventually committed within minutes of each other the following week.
Hackett is the top prospect in the state as a five-star offensive tackle from Fort Gibson and flipped his commitment from Texas Tech. Penny is the No. 2 in-state recruit as a four-star interior offensive lineman from Bixby. That pair of pledges immediately gave the Sooners a top-5 class.
Those four September additions joined three-star offensive tackle Luke Wilson, who was the first 2027 addition in early August. OU also likely isn't done adding talent before September concludes, with many top targets predicted to choose the Sooners, and Hayes Fawcett of Rivals and On3 hinting that OU should pick up two commits on Monday to further solidify that top spot.
Those who look at the glass half empty will point out that these commits still have two years before getting on campus and could change their minds by then. That's a possibility, but even if some do, the Sooners' quick rise to No. 1 only attracts more of the best talent available in the country, and that's what results in more wins for OU in the future.
