After several recent swing and misses, the Oklahoma Sooners finally hit a home run on the recruiting trail.
Offensive lineman Deacon Schmitt announced during a ceremony on Saturday that he committed to the Sooners. The news of Schmitt’s commitment came at the end of a week during which OU missed out on a handful of targets the Sooners had closed in on.
OL Deacon Schmitt commits to OU over Alabama, Colorado
Schmitt was a massive win at 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds. He's a four-star offensive lineman in the 2026 class out of Windsor High School in Colorado. OU beat out in-state Colorado and SEC rival Alabama for the big win. Schmitt also had a lengthy list of other offers from Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kansas State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, USC, Utah, Vanderbilt, Washington, Washington State, Wisconsin and more.
According to the 247Sports Composite, Schmitt is the No. 31 interior offensive lineman in the class and top overall prospect in the state of Colorado. 247Sports is the only major recruiting service that has given Schmitt three stars, while Rivals and On3 list him as a four-star recruit. Rivals and On3 also rated Schmitt as an offensive tackle instead of an interior lineman like 247Sports.
Schmitt was the second offensive lineman OU added to its 2026 class after fellow four-star recruit Noah Best from Midlothian, Texas. The Sooners also had an early pledge from three-star offensive lineman Will Conroy, but he recently flipped to North Carolina.
Landing Schmitt was a good ending to a long week for the Sooners on the recruiting trail. On Thursday, OU missed out on two four-star wide receivers it had emerged as a finalist for. On Friday, top in-state recruit Tajh Overton, a defensive lineman, chose Bedlam rival Oklahoma State over OU. Then later Friday, junior college tight end Josiah Jefferson, the brother of OU great Tony Jefferson, committed to Utah over the Sooners despite the family ties.
The Sooners’ 2026 class sits at 14 commits with more likely on the way soon.
