Oklahoma’s SEC Softball Tournament path doesn’t include a single gimme

The Oklahoma Sooners can go 4-for-4 in winning SEC hardware in their second season in the conference, but just like everything in the toughest conference in college softball, no matter how much of a breeze OU has made it look so far, it won't be easy.

The bracket for the 2026 SEC Softball Tournament this week in Lexington, Kentucky, was released over the weekend after the regular season concluded with the Sooners claiming back-to-back regular-season conference titles with a series win over Texas A&M. Last season in their first year in the conference, the Sooners were regular-season champs and co-champions of the tournament after the final against Texas A&M was canceled because of weather.

Sooners' return to SEC championship won't come easy as top seed

That regular-season title once again has OU as the No. 1 seed for the SEC Tournament, which also earned the Sooners a bye to the quarterfinals and an extra two days of rest. However, once OU finally takes the field, nothing will come easy in its path back to the finals, even as the top seed.

The Sooners await the winner between No. 8 LSU and No. 9 Georgia for a quarterfinal matchup on Thursday evening. OU swept Georgia just last weekend, but the Bulldogs are still dangerous and revealed that with a series win against then-No. 8 Florida over the weekend.

LSU also already proved it can take down the Sooners after handing OU its first SEC loss of the season back in March. The Tigers are also entering the postseason on a five-game winning streak after sweeping Auburn.

It will then likely be the Red River Rivalry in the semifinals if both rivals get that far, as expected. Defending national champion Texas lost two of three to OU this season, but the Longhorns were swept by the Sooners last year before getting revenge and beating OU when it really mattered in the Women's College World Series. Although Patty Gasso clearly has Mike White's number, a team that talented can still never be overlooked.

Texas, though, still has to likely get past No. 5 Tennessee in the quarterfinals. The Vols have the best pitching staff in the country with a team ERA of 1.32, which tops college softball. That would create a massive matchup against the Sooners' historically powerful offense.

Obviously whoever comes out of the other side of the bracket would also be a serious threat to the Sooners in the finals. That includes No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Florida, No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 7 Arkansas.

For a single-elimination tournament that features eight teams that have legit chances to make the WCWS, nothing will come easy for any team.
