The 2026 Oklahoma Sooners made history, but head coach Patty Gasso isn't going to enjoy it, at least not yet.
The No. 1 Sooners on Friday night broke the NCAA record, which the 2021 OU team previously held, for the most home runs in a season when freshman Kendall Wells, who's also after her own record, hit the team's 162nd homer of the season. The Sooners put that total at 167 by the time the weekend ended with a sweep of No. 11 Georgia.
Sooners smash NCAA record but Patty Gasso keeps team grounded fast
"I might sound like downer, but I'm not really like this," Gasso said after history was made. "It's greatness. You're witnessing greatness right now. I don't say this to the team and we don't really celebrate it. We gotta stay humble. We gotta stay hard-working. There's gonna be a time we're gonna celebrate all this.
"Wasn't expecting all the fireworks and things like that, but it was kind of nice, I guess. I was just wanting to keep playing and keep our groove going. But it is an amazing accomplishment the fact that this team, that's still very young, is doing this now. It's something I think that we'll all remember."

In the midst of the team making history, Wells is also chasing the record for most runs in a season by a player. With 36 homers, which leads all of college softball, Wells is just two away from surpassing the mark Arizona's Lauren Espinoza set in 1995. Wells has also already broken the OU record for most homers in a season, which is impressive enough at a program famous for producing home run queens.
Gasso has made it clear she's not ready to celebrate anything yet, though. The Sooners' streak of four national titles in a row ended last season in the semifinals of the Women's College World Series, and Gasso's top priority is starting a new title run with eight championships already on her resume.

However, that doesn't mean OU fans shouldn't just celebrate what these Sooners are accomplishing, but embrace every moment. Not many fan bases get to celebrate any sort of history, let alone on a consistent basis, so Sooner Nation should never become calloused to what they have in Gasso's program.
Fans should boast that no other team has ever hit more home runs than theirs, and the season is still far from over. They should watch every single pitch thrown at Wells to make sure they witness even more history. And they should be just as glued to a TV when the postseason starts and Gasso really starts chasing what she's after.
It's Gasso's job to lead the Sooners' to championships, but it's the fans' role to enjoy all of it, which also hopefully includes a ninth national title, and enjoying a few records along the way won't take anything away from that celebration, but only make this season that more magical.
Don't let this time pass you by, Sooner Nation.
