Kendall Wells pounded her 36th home run in the first inning and Miali Guachino pitched a three-hit complete game as top-ranked Oklahoma defeated No. 11 Georgia 3-1 in the second game of its series on Saturday to clinch the series and go up a full game over Alabama in first place in SEC standings.

Wells' two-run blast over the right-field fence as the second Oklahoma hitter in the bottom of the first proved to be all the Sooners would need in winning their fifth game in the last six and their seventh SEC series. OU added another run in the third inning on a solo home run by Ella Parker, her 19th of the season.

Oklahoma clinches Georgia series and inches closer to SEC title

Wells, the nation home run leader this season, homered in her first at-bat for the second straight game. She is now within one of tying and two from breaking the NCAA single-season home run record held by Lauren Espinoza of Arizona and set back in 1995. It should be noted, however, that Espinoza was a senior when she set the record and she did it in 70 games while in the Women's College World Series. Wells, on the other hand, has played in just 49 games and is just a freshman.

Guachino, a transfer from Ole Miss, took care of the rest, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out six to win her 13th game of the season. It was her fourth complete game of the season. Thirteen of the 21 outs she recorded came on strikeouts (6) and seven weakly hit pop-ups.

The No. 1 Sooners (45-6, 17-3) collected just six hits off of Georgia starter Randi Roelling, who also pitched a solid game, albeit in a losing effort for the Bulldogs (34-15, 10-10). Four of Oklahoma's six hits were singles. The other two were home runs, which accounted for all the Sooner scoring. Saturday's game marked only the sixth time in 51 games this season the Sooners were been held to three or fewer runs. They've won four of those games.

The final game of the series will be played Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. CT and completes a seven-game homestand. The game will be televised on ESPNU. It will be Oklahoma's final regular-season home game of the season at Love's Field, but the Sooners are expected to host both NCAA Regional and Super Regional games there in the postseason.
