Dominoes are starting to fall in the 2028 recruiting class throughout college football.

Rivals Hayes Fawcett reported on Thursday that 2028 four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as just the second top-20 QB in the class to already make a decision. At first glance, other than the Sooners having an offer on the table to Tagliaferri, that news doesn't seem to have any impact on anyone in Norman. But the butterfly effect is stronger on the college football recruiting trail than anywhere else.

Trey Tagliaferri commitment clears up picture of Sooners 2028 priorities

Yes, Tagliaferri is one of just five 2028 quarterbacks the Sooners have offered, but even before his decision, it seemed like four-star Brady Quinn had emerged as offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle's favorite target. Quinn, who is named after a Fighting Irish legend, seemed destined for Notre Dame after already taking three unofficial visits to South Bend. Notre Dame hadn't offered, but there was obviously a lot of interest between both parties.

All of a sudden, though, with Notre Dame now having a QB locked in from the class, Quinn's recruitment is not only wide open, but the Sooners might have just jumped to the top of his list. And even if Tagliaferri really was the Sooners' Plan A over Quinn, Tagliaferri just played matchmaker and made Quinn OU's No. 1 priority.

Quinn visited Oklahoma on June 16, the day college football programs could start officially contacting prospects from the 2028 class. He even posted a text from head coach Brent Venables in anticipation to the trip and posted again afterward. SoonerScoop's Parker Thune also reported in May that OU general manager Jim Nagy visited Quinn in Florida.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Quinn is the No. 22 QB in the class, while Tagliaferri is No. 14 at the position. Rivals has Quinn ranked as high as the No. 18 quarterback in the country out of Chaminade-Madonna High School in Hollywood, Florida. His other offers include Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Ole Miss, SMU, South Carolina, UCLA and more.

The battle for Quinn is still far from over, though, even if one of the Sooners' biggest challengers was eliminated. Rivals actually has Quinn most likely picking in-state Miami or Florida, even though the Hurricanes haven't even offered yet. Quinn is also making sure he weighs all his options after a packed spring that included visits to Clemson, Indiana, Notre Dame, Purdue, SMU, Miami, Alabama and Kentucky.

If the Sooners do miss out on Quinn, they still have plenty of other options and time to make things happen. The race for 2028 talent has only just begun. They've also offered four-star Graham Simpson, three-star Trey Wright and unrated Gavin Strang. There's also always rising prospect Nash Henry just down the road at Norman North High School.

If we've learned anything from the past two recruiting cycles with Arbuckle, it's that he's going to get the quarterback he wants.
