As great as Brent Venables and Oklahoma have been in recruiting the 2027 class, Sooners fans have to expect that some bumps and bruises are going to be on the way as well. And with that, OU's stellar '27 haul has taken a bit of a hit, as standout wide receiver Demare Dezeurn has backed off his pledge in a move we didn't quite see coming.
Sooners made it almost impossible for Uhila Wolfgramm not to commit on the spot
The 5-10, 170-pounder originally committed to Venables and his staff in September, with it being a major win for the Sooners. However, Dezeurn, a Westlake, Calif. playmaker, has been receiving increased interest from the Cal Golden Bears of late, including a weekend official visit currently taking place. Could a flip to his in-state school be on the way soon?

Demare Dezeurn decommits from Oklahoma in a rough recruiting loss for Brent Venables
While yes this stings a bit, don't forget that Oklahoma still has the No. 2 ranked class in the country according to 247Sports, which speaks volumes to the fantastic work being done by Venables. The Sooners have posted huge recruiting wins and one loss isn't going to change that fact. Still, this one does hurt a bit.
Dezeurn seemed like he was pretty dang fired up to play his college ball in the SEC down the road, but he's had a bit of a change of heart. With this news dropping in the middle of his Cal official visit too, it's hard not to think about him giving the ACC side some good news in the near future, which would of course make things a bit worse for Venables.
It also wouldn't be the first time this year that Cal lands a punch on the Sooners. As most of you remember, touted running back Jaxsen Stokes was also Oklahoma-bound at one point, but he flipped to Cal on April 26. With Stokes also being a California native, it wasn't a huge surprise that he decided to stay much closer to home. Could this change OU's recruiting strategy with The Golden State down the road? That's hard to say, but clearly something is a bit off there.
With Dezeurn and Oklahoma parting ways here, the Sooners now hold 22 pledges, with two wideouts still in the fold: in-state standout Greydon Howell and Alabama stud Tra'Von Hall. The class as a whole is headlined by 5-star pledges Cooper Hackett, Cooper Witten and Kaeden Penny. Fans are still celebrating the fact that OU was able to reel all three of them in.
Could Venables go back to his board and work overtime on a Dezeurn replacement? That's certainly in the cards, and a player to keep an eye on moving forward would most definitely be Jayden Fields, a stud safety/wide receiver who's taking his Norman official visit on June 19. Fields' versatility alone makes him stand out, as Venables will roll out the red carpet in hopes of landing his services. Could a new target emerge with Dezeurn no longer having a future with the program? Don't rule that out.
