The Oklahoma Sooners are still suffering losses even in April.
After Eddie Radosevich of SoonerScoop reported early Friday that freshman tight end Davon Mitchell was no longer with the OU football program, On3's Hayes Fawcett reported later that Mitchell plans to enter the transfer portal.

Sooners tight end Davon Mitchell reportedly plans to enter transfer portal
There were extremely high hopes for Michell to be up there with names like Mark Andrews and Jermaine Gresham. He got to OU as a consensus four-star recruit in the 2024 class. Every major recruiting service ranked Mitchell as a top-15 tight end in the class, with ESPN putting him the highest at No. 4.
Mitchell was originally supposed to be part of the 2025 class but reclassified as a sophomore. Despite being a year younger, Mitchell was still a monstrous 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds.

Sooner Nation never got to witness what all the hype was about, though. Mitchell never played a snap for the Sooners while redshirting last season. He was expected to debut in OU's bowl game against Navy but still never saw the field.
SoonerScoop reported that Mitchell missed several team activities recently while the Sooners are in the midst of spring ball and there were rumors of other issues with Mitchell. The cons apparently outweighed all the physical pros of Mitchell since he's now headed elsewhere.
The spring transfer window does not actually open until April 16. Mitchell will have four years of eligibility once he enters.
The Sooners already lost tight end Bauer Sharp, who led the Sooners in receiving yards last season, to LSU during the winter transfer cycle. Tight end Jake Roberts also exhausted his eligibility.
Every Oklahoma football player not returning for 2025 season
During the winter transfer cycle, OU and tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley added three tight ends from the portal in Carson Kent (Kennesaw State), Will Huggins (Pittsburg State) and John Locke (Louisiana Tech).
With Mitchell's departure, the Sooners now have six tight ends on the roster and none have any real experience at the position at the Power Four level. The position is definitely OU's biggest question mark heading into next season. It was already that way even before losing Mitchell, although he was probably the most talented of the group.
