The SEC every week proves to be the deepest conference in college softball, but as other teams devour themselves, the Oklahoma Sooners have only benefited from the Royal Rumble while still sitting pretty -- now on top.
The biggest shakeup in the SEC Power Rankings from last week was Alabama taking down previously No. 1 Texas in a three-game series, which completely rearranged the top of the list. The Sooners get Texas next this weekend in Austin, which will either further solidify the top of the conference or force these rankings to completely reshuffled up top again.
Much could be said for the Sooners' lack of conference competition so far, but they've still absolutely destroyed everyone that's been put in front of them, other than one slip-up against LSU. OU has also been conquering opponents with a historically powerful lineup, particularly freshman Kendall Wells.
The Red River Rivalry this weekend will be the most telling series of the season so far, not just for the Sooners, but the top of the SEC.
Alabama might have jumped to the top spot in national rankings after its defeat of Texas, but not in these power rankings. Bama had an extremely weak nonconference schedule it still needs to overcome, but the Sooners failing to do what the Crimson Tide just did to Texas would easily secure Bama the top spot next week.
Texas was finally dethroned with a series loss to Bama after also dropping a game to Texas A&M last week. Another series loss to OU this weekend would quickly assure the Longhorns don't belong near the top of the SEC.
Arkansas took two of three from Florida last week to really earn this fourth spot and is a win away from sweeping Auburn this week. The Razorbacks could find themselves in the top 3 soon if they just keep winning.
Florida just won two of three over Mississippi State and is one of the best teams in the country, but a series loss to Arkansas has the Gators barely inside the top 5 in the SEC at 36-5. The Gators need a win over one of those top-3 teams at some point to move up more.
Texas A&M is dangerous and just proved that with a series win over Georgia, but the Aggies still aren't quite top-5 material. Texas A&M will be a team that has even more success in the NCAA Tournament than its conference tournament.
Georgia's spot at No. 7 was solidified with a series loss to Texas A&M. After facing Missouri this weekend, we'll really see what the Bulldogs are made of when they take on Texas, OU and Florida in three straight series to finish the season.
The fact Tennessee started conference play unbeaten and at the top of college softball proves how loaded the SEC is as the Volunteers are now barely even in the top half of the league. The Vols finally got back on track taking two games from South Carolina.
Mississippi State is the highest team on this list with a losing conference record, but all of its series series losses came against teams ahead, including Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. The Bulldogs also won two of three against South Carolina.
The Sooners learned the hard way that LSU is better than its SEC record after suffering their only conference loss so far last week to the Tigers. LSU has series losses to OU, Tennessee and Texas A&M with wins over South Carolina and Missouri.
There's no reason to have Mizzou any higher with series losses to LSU, Alabama and Florida. The Tigers also shouldn't be any lower, though, with a sweep of Auburn and solid nonconference slate.
Despite recently being a top-25 team, South Carolina hasn't won an SEC series yet, and likely won't this weekend against Florida. Next weekend, though, the Gamecocks travel to Missouri with a real chance to get a series W and move up a spot.
A series win over Tennessee has Ole Miss off the bottom of the league, which also further reveals how stacked the SEC is from top to bottom. The Rebels got a break from SEC action last week after beating the Vols the week before.
Auburn won two games against Kentucky early on as the Tigers' only SEC wins so far, and maybe for the rest of the season.
Kentucky stole one game from fellow SEC bottom-dweller Auburn, but that's all the Wildcats have managed. Kentucky fans shouldn't expect the Wildcats to get off the bottom.
