Every Oklahoma game this season serves as a pleasant reminder that we are witnessing a special time in the history of Sooner softball, and Tuesday evening at Love's Field in Norman was yet another demonstration of that.
The Sooners (35-3, 8-1) opened up the game against visiting Wichita State on Tuesday with a four-run first inning, the same as they had done on the road Sunday in the weekend series with LSU. Tuesday's four-run inning, along with a six-run sixth, marked the 49th time this season Oklahoma scored four or more runs in a single inning. Once this season, the Sooners actually scored 14 runs in an inning.
Sooners' run-rule of Wichita State just another show of 2026 dominance
That was not the most significant thing, however, that happened on Tuesday night. Freshman Kendall Wells hit her record-setting 27th home run of the season. With a fence-clearing blast in the sixth inning with two aboard, the OU freshman set an SEC record for the most home runs in a season.

Wells is eight away from setting an Oklahoma record for the most in a single season and 10 away from tying the NCAA record.
Wells' long ball was one of four the Sooners hit against Wichita State. Kasidi Pickering, Ailana Agbayani and Isabela Emerling also went yard, giving Oklahoma a nation-best 137 as a team. The Sooners have hit four or more home runs in 18 of 38 games this season and are well on pace to shatter their own record of 161 for the most home runs in a season, set by the 2021 Oklahoma team.
Oklahoma's 137 home runs rank third in Sooner softball history and sixth all-time nationally. With 17 regular-season games remaining, the Sooners are on a pace that would give them 198 before entering postseason play and demolish the all-time NCAA record.
The Sooners have hit at least one home run in 35 of 38 games, an NCAA-leading 3.62 per game. Six different Oklahoma hitters have 10 or more this season and another has eight.
And home runs aren't the only season record this Oklahoma team is probably going to blow by. With three hits and seven total bases against Wichita State, Pickering became the third Sooner to reach 100 total bases for the season. Wells (128) and Gabbie Garcia (106) are the other two, with Ella Parker and Kai Minor also closing in on the century mark with 99 and 85 total bases, respectively.
Through 38 games, Oklahoma has collected 939 total bases this season. By comparison, the 2025 Sooner team was credited with 981 total bases in a 61-game season, and the 2021 Oklahoma softball team, considered by many to be one of the greatest of all-time, finished a 60-game season with an NCAA record 1,279 total bases. At OU's current pace, this record is easily in serious jeopardy.
Oklahoma's 12-3 win in five innings over Wichita State extended the Sooners' home record this season to 15-0 and also represented their 26th victory by run-rule in 2026. The significance of that stat is 68% of the Sooners' wins this season have not gone the full seven innings.
The next reminder of this team's greatness will come this weekend when No. 3 Oklahoma plays host to SEC cellar-dweller Kentucky. Look for another Sooner power display.
