Oklahoma freshman catcher Kendall Wells thought it was just another home run, but it went down in history.

Wells on Tuesday during the No. 3 Sooners' 12-3 win over Wichita State at Love's Field broke the SEC record for most home runs in a season with 27, and she's not even close to being done adding to that total and shattering more records during her first season of college softball.

Kendall Wells breaks SEC record during outstanding freshman season

"It feels really good," Wells told SEC Network after the game. "I didn't even know that was the record, so it feels cool."

Wells was in high school this time last year, and now she's leading all of college softball in home runs during a historical season. On top of the nation-leading 27 home runs, Wells is also batting .383 with 60 runs batted in through her first 37 collegiate games. And with 17 regular-season games left on the schedule, plus whatever the postseason holds, Wells is on pace to become a popular name in the record books as a freshman.

Wells' 27 homers so far puts her three away from the NCAA freshman record, seven from the OU single-season record and 10 away from the NCAA record. Former Sooners Jocelyn Alo and Lauren Chamberlain are two of three players currently tied for that freshman record at 30. Alo also holds the NCAA record for career home runs with 122, and not to get too far ahead, but Wells is definitely headed toward that mark within the next four years.

It was early in the season when OU head coach Patty Gasso was already mentioning Wells among names like Alo and Chamberlain. Except, Gasso hinted that Wells could be even better, and nothing yet has proven otherwise.

“Offensively, I’ve seen Jocelyn Alo, I’ve seen Lauren Chamberlain. This is something new," Gasso said hten. "This is different. It is some of the most elite power I’ve ever seen from a young player. And she came in like that. It's not like we had to build her into that. She came in like that."

OU softball fans might have become calloused to extraordinary between a list of all-time greats to wear crimson and cream, and eight national titles, but Wells is special even by OU softball standards.
