As Oklahoma kicks off the first week of fall camp, fans and coaches alike are keeping a close eye on the health and readiness of key players. Here's a look at the latest updates on some of the Sooners' notable athletes:
WR Andrel Anthony:
While Andrel Anthony is unlikely to be ready for the season opener on August 30th against the Temple Owls, there are promising signs of his progress. Anthony has been spotted at practice, running and working on regaining his strength. Although he hasn’t fully participated in drills yet, his presence on the field and efforts to get his legs underneath him are encouraging.
The coaching staff remains cautious, prioritizing his long-term health, but the steady improvement is a positive indicator for his eventual return. Although Anthony would be a welcome re-addition to the offense, his return won't be rushed. The receiving corps is deep and I would imagine the Sooners' staff wants to make sure he's good to go for their first road game against Auburn on 9/28.
If Anthony can be ready for Tennessee on 9/21 that would be fantastic. But i'd imagine the hardline for Anthony's return will most likely be set for Auburn which 1) gives them a much needed added weapon for the first SEC road game and, 2) gets him a week of prep and game action before a two week off period prior to Texas.
WR Jalil Farooq:
Jalil Farooq has been participating in practice sessions, albeit with some limitations. He’s actively running routes and taking part in team activities, although he might not yet be a full-contact participant. Farooq's involvement in practice is a good sign, showing his dedication and determination to be ready for the upcoming season. His continued progress will be crucial for the Sooners’ receiving corps.
This one is a little more important than Anthony's injury, but also a little less serious. Farooq is a centerpiece of the Sooners' new air raid attack. If the offense lacks him and Andrel Anthony, there could be trouble. I'd imagine his injury status, or lack of participation, is more "slow start" related, but it's still a concern. Luckily Farooq does not have an extensive injury history and this seems to be more related to caution than anything else. At the end of the day however, the Sooners offense needs Farooq to be consistently available.
C Troy Everett:
Center Troy Everett has yet to join the practice sessions fully, and his exact return date remains uncertain. Everett has been diligently working on his recovery and was active in some off-season workouts. While his timetable for return is still unclear, his commitment to rehabilitation and preparation is evident. The coaching staff will continue to monitor his progress closely, hopeful for his eventual return to the field.
Up until Branson Hickman's signing this one was a massive concern. Luckily Hickman seems to be a perfect fit and a much needed addition to the Sooners' offensive line, which is their most glaring weakness at this point. I wouldn't expect Everett to be on the field this season. Hickman should be the starting center for the duration of the season. Second year center Joshua Bates is most likely his backup should anything happen to Hickman.
As fall camp progresses, the Sooners are optimistic about the strides their players are making in recovery. The focus remains on ensuring each athlete's health and readiness, with the ultimate goal of having a strong, cohesive team ready to compete come game day.
