Making history as a coach in college sports isn't always a good thing -- just ask Oklahoma men's basketball coach Porter Moser.
The Sooners on Tuesday night in front of a full Lloyd Noble Center (thanks to free admission and cheap beer) lost to No. 15 Arkansas 83-79 to extend their SEC losing streak to seven while dropping to 11-10 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
Sooners extend brutal losing streak with loss to Arkansas
Looking ahead, there seems to be no end in sight to the Sooners' current skid, so barring an upset, Moser will still be in OU's record book long after he's inevitably fired by the end of 2026 as he infamously goes down in OU history.
The Sooners' seven-game losing streak is the longest since Jeff Capel's team dropped eight in a row during the 2010-11 season, which ended up being Capel's last leading OU. The season before that, Capel's 2009-10 squad ended the season with nine straight losses, which is the second-longest streak in program history.
The longest losing streak in OU men's basketball history was 10 in a row way back during the 1963-64 season. Most OU fans weren't around then to suffer through those hard times, but they are now as Moser's 2025-26 team seems destined to make that wrong kind of history.
The Red River Rivalry is next for the Sooners at 1 p.m. CT Saturday in Norman. A loss then would tie Capel's losing streak from 15 years ago.
Texas has also been struggling at 12-8, but the Longhorns have had Moser's number since he got to Oklahoma. The Sooners lost seven in a row to Texas after Moser took charge. That embarrassing streak finally ended last year when OU won 76-72 in the final game of the regular season to eventually help propel the Sooners to their first (and likely only) NCAA Tournament appearance under Moser.
If Texas hands the Sooners an eighth straight loss, a trip to Kentucky would then likely be the ninth. The chance to tie the record would be against No. 18 Vanderbilt on Feb. 7 in Nashville. The Sooners then finally return home on Feb. 14 to host Georgia, which is 16-4 and just dropped from the top 25 after losing to Texas.
It's a long ways to look ahead, but with how miserable things have been for the Sooners this season under Moser, it seems OU fans should brace for the worst as the Sooners are more likely to make the wrong kind of history rather than finally notching a win over any of the next four teams on the schedule.
