Every extra day with Porter Moser is hurting Oklahoma basketball

It's over. Or at least it should be.

There's no need to put off the inevitable any longer.

The Sooners on Tuesday night at South Carolina extended their SEC losing streak to five games with a disastrous 85-76 loss to the Gamecocks. South Carolina, on a three-game skid of its own, was thought of to be maybe the worst team in the SEC. But now, it's definitely OU thanks to Porter Moser.

In a game that was the Sooners' best chance at a win since Jan. 3, they still had no hope after instantly getting down 11-0. But in Year 5 with Moser as head coach, OU fans never really feel like their team has a chance with Moser in charge.

Sooners need to fire Porter Moser now, not later

Similar to the past two seasons, the Sooners again looked promising early on and got through their nonconference schedule at 10-3. OU, though, is just 1-5 since in SEC play after beating Ole Miss in its conference opener, then prompting a five-game losing streak that seems to never end.

The Sooners have never had a winning conference record between both the Big 12 and SEC under Moser, and that trend won't end in 2026. Last year was also the Sooners' first NCAA Tournament appearance under Moser thanks to a late winning streak led by a future lottery pick in Jeremiah Fears. That will not happen again.

OU has a hopeless men's basketball program under Moser, so there's only one way to instill any sort of life. Moser has to go, and there's no need put it off considering this team is doomed already if Moser is leading the way.

Fans asked for it in 2024 and didn't get it. Fans begged for it last year and nothing changed. Now fans are ready to riot, or worse, stop caring at all.

If Moser does keep his job into February, barring a 180, it's because OU athletic director Joe Castiglione is putting it off for the next guy with his retirement drawing near. That's quite the detour on his journey into the sunset.

But OU fans need to be put out of their misery. Sooner Nation won't want to turn on the TV, let alone walk into Lloyd Noble Center. And as the rest of the SEC mocks OU's basketball attendance and future recruits see a lifeless arena, the job just becomes harder and harder for Moser's replacement the longer these OU fans don't have a team to get behind. At least firing Moser promptly would give fans a reason to support this squad and at least believe there's a little bit of pride left about the basketball program.

Even tomorrow would be too late to start the search for OU's next men's basketball coach.
