Porter Moser closer to landing Oklahoma's first 2027 commit but challenges are still ahead

The Oklahoma basketball team has a chance to gain its first commitment in the class of 2027.

The Sooners have reached the NCAA Tournament just one time since Porter Moser took over as the team's head coach, but has still managed to land a few solid recruits. That streak could continue, as OU is one of five finalists for Calvary Baptist Academy guard Tyrone Jamison Jr., a four-star prospect.

Jamison recently revealed his top six schools, which included Oklahoma, USC, Baylor, LSU, Iowa and Miami, and will announce his commitment on Saturday, according to 247Sports national recruiting analyst Brandon Jenkins.

The rising senior is rated the No. 38 overall prospect and No. 12 point guard in the nation, according to 247Sports. Listed at 6-foot-1 and 165 pounds, Jamison would be Oklahoma's first pledge in the 2027 cycle and would be a solid starting point for Moser and company.

Following the 2026-27 season, the Sooners could be looking at a roster that features only Dayton Forsythe, Jake Hansen and 2026 signee Quincy Wadley at guard, not counting other players added from the transfer portal.

Regardless, adding another guard would help bolster the team's depth in the backcourt and give OU a talented piece to help compete in the SEC.

In the 2026 recruiting class, Moser and company signed four-star wing player Gage Mayfield and Wadley, who could form a solid young trio with Jamison if Oklahoma is able to land the highly touted guard.

Jamison, who plays for JL3, a Texas-based AAU team, earned 17U Third Team recognition at Peach Jam after averaging 16 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game. Peach Jam is one of the nation's premier grassroots tournaments and features a number of high-profile prospects.

Jamison's best performance came in a win against Arizona Unity, which saw the four-star guard notch 22 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.

The Sooners certainly have competition to land the talented guard, though. Iowa reached the Elite 8 in 2026, while both Baylor and Miami have also seen recent success. USC has also turned in multiple strong recruiting classes, landing five-star guard Alijah Arenas in the 2025 class and five-star Christian Collins in the 2026 cycle.

LSU, on the other hand, could hold an advantage for Jamison, an in-state prospect, and hired Will Wade to be its head coach once again over the offseason after Wade led NC State to the NCAA Tournament in 2026.

If Moser is able to land the four-star recruit, it would be a massive win for the Sooners on the recruiting trail.
