Just like, well, absolutely no one predicted, the Oklahoma Sooners are headed to Omaha for the Men's College World Series as maybe the hottest team in college baseball.
The Sooners destroyed Big 12 champion and No. 15 national seed Kansas in the Lawrence Super Regional to advance to the MCWS for the first time since 2022, when OU again under head coach Skip Johnson made an improbable run to the championship series. The sweep was punctuated by the Sooners' weather delayed 13-2 beatdown of the Jayhawks that started on Sunday evening and finished up Monday afternoon to officially punch their ticket.
Sooners headed to Omaha after miracles vs Georgia Tech and dominating Kansas
Of all the possible Cinderella talk when the NCAA Baseball Championship bracket was revealed about two weeks ago, there was never any mention of the struggling Sooners in the Atlanta Regional. Not even by the Sooner faithful.
The Sooners entered the NCAA Tournament at 32-21 and in the bottom half of the SEC standings after losing in the first round of the conference tournament. They had lost seven of their last 10 games and hadn't even won a three-game series since the weekend of April 17-19 with four SEC series losses in a row.
OU was dipping at the worst time.
That skid dropped the Sooners from contending to host their own regional in Norman to being sent to Atlanta to get welcomed by Georgia Tech, the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and ACC champion. OU immediately needed a minor comeback in Game 1 of the Atlanta Regional just to get past The Citadel, making it look as if the Sooners stood no chance against the Yellow Jackets, who began NCAA Tournament action with a 22-5 trouncing of UIC. And OU actually didn't belong on the same field as Georgia Tech in their first meeting, which was a 9-3 blowout for the Yellow Jackets.
But then Johnson managed to light his team on fire.
With a loss ending their season, the Sooners beat The Citadel again 15-5, then later in the same day scored 13 unanswered runs to force an "if necessary" game with a 15-8 win over Georgia Tech. Then, OU was even more impressive with another comeback against Georgia Tech and got the game to extras after being down 7-3 entering the seventh. In the end, Dayton Tockey, the hero of this entire run, smashed a walk-off home run 454 feet to send his team to Super Regionals.
But needing to put together their first series win in nearly two months, the Sooners were still doubted headed to Lawrence with some of the worst national title odds by FanDuel. In Lawrence, though, the Sooners went from dangerous to scary while dismantling the Jayhawks to get to the MCWS.
Between pulling off miracles to escape the Atlanta Regional and looking like a true national title contender in Super Regionals, the Sooners' run to Omaha sent the college baseball world in shock. And it also got everybody's attention.
It also now has Sooner Nation asking, "Why not Oklahoma?"
Credit to Skip Johnson. I gotta be honest, I can’t believe the Sooners are headed to Omaha.

An unreal postseason run.
No one (even me) gave Oklahoma a shot to make it out of the Atlanta Regional. They take down Georgia Tech twice and then absolutely dismantle the Jayhawks. Coach Skip Johnson and this team deserve so much credit for the run they have been on. pic.twitter.com/uMC2J9c0dD

Oklahoma becomes the 5th SEC team to make the College World Series.

They went on the road and beat the ACC Champion and Big 12 Champion to do so.
Helluva run for the Sooners. #CWS #Omaha #BoomerSooner
The #Sooners are headed back to Omaha for the first time since 2022 when they were CWS runner up.

Impressive turnaround for a team that lost its last four series in regular season SEC play. Skip Johnson’s squad is en fuego.
It was always Oklahoma. https://t.co/Fc5CCu8MsT

And of course Toby Rowland's call perfectly encapsulated the moment:
