Oklahoma stole Texas' 2027 recruiting bragging rights back in a matter of days

The Longhorns enjoyed it while it lasted.

Texas had and overly enjoyed bragging rights about the 2027 recruiting cycle for all of three days, but that's all already over with the Oklahoma Sooners once again back in the top 5 of team recruiting rankings just one commitment later.

After a pair of recruiting losses for the Sooners last week, including four-star cornerback Brandon Sherrard to Texas, they slipped outside of the top 5 of both Rivals and 247Sports team recruiting rankings. The final boost the Longhorns needed in order to be the ones to replace OU in the top 5 was a commitment from five-star interior offensive lineman Ismael Camara on the Fourth of July. Fellow FanSided site Hook 'Em Headlines even took a premature victory lap after that recruiting win since it jumped Texas over the Sooners.

Sooners' latest recruiting win turned Texas celebration into old news

Then three days later on Tuesday, one of Texas' own, three-star athlete Jaiden Fields, became the Sooners' 27th commitment from the class. That decision alone was enough to put Oklahoma back in the top 5 of recruiting rankings at No. 4 based on the 247Sports Composite, which takes in account all major recruiting ratings as the most accurate assessment. The Sooners jumped back over Texas and Miami.

For comparison, according to the 247Sports Composite, the Sooners' 2027 class is headlined by a pair of five-star recruits in linebacker Cooper Witten, from Texas, and tight end Seneca Driver. 247Sports has also given five stars to in-state commits cornerback Gabriel Osborne Jr. and offensive tackle Kaeden Penny. Blue-chip offensive tackle Cooper Hackett, also from the Sooner State, had five stars before a season-ending surgery led to a drop in his rating. It makes it even sweeter that the Sooners are out-recruiting Texas with home-grown talent after all that talk from Longhorn fans that OU needs their state to succeed.

Of the Longhorns' 22 total commits, three have five-star status. That number, though, will soon be reduced and cause Texas to plummet in recruiting rankings once five-star wide receiver Easton Royal inevitably flips from his pledge. That might not happen until closer to the Early Signing Period after the Longhorns have also suffered some losses on the field, including hopefully to the Sooners on that second Saturday of October.

The biggest news for the Sooners, though, from their rise in recruiting rankings is they're closer to achieving an all-time recruiting class under Brent Venables. If OU stays put in the top 5, it would be the program's first top-5 recruiting class since 247Sports started releasing team rankings in 2010. And at this point, it seems the Sooners are more likely to continue a climb in rankings by the end while the Horns seem destined to drop.

Those recruiting wins means more victories on the field in the future as the Sooners look to once again take control of the Red River.
