Winning national championships at Oklahoma isn't just important in the sport of football. The Sooners have become perennial national title contenders in several collegiate sports.
Oklahoma has won a total of 45 national championships across seven different athletic programs, the 45th coming in 2025 when the Sooners' women's gymnastics team won its seventh national championship. All seven have come since 2014.
OU sent 9 different sports to 2025 NCAA postseason competition
The national title in women's gymnastics was the only team national championship trophy won by Oklahoma last calendar year, but eight other sports participated in postseason action in 2025, including six men's teams and three women's.
The Sooner football team returned to the College Football Playoff for the first time in six seasons after finishing with a 10-2 regular-season record, a four-game improvement over the previous season. OU earned a No. 8 seed in this past season's CFP and became the first Oklahoma team to have a home playoff game. Unfortunately, the Sooners lost to Alabama, 34-26, in its opening playoff game, the fifth straight time OU failed to get beyond the opening round in its five playoff appearances.
Oklahoma softball won the SEC championship in its first season in the conference and was seeking a record-breaking fifth consecutive national championship. The Sooners were seeded No. 2 in the NCAA Softball Championship last year and advanced to the national semifinal round of the 2025 Women's College World Series before being eliminated by Texas Tech. It was OU's ninth consecutive appearance in the WCWS and 18th in the last 26 years.
Men's gymnastics entered the 2025 NCAA Championships as the No. 1 overall seed, but finished in third place in the national championship. The OU gymnasts fell a bit short last season, but the program has 12 national championships to its credit, tied with Penn State for the most among Division-I schools. Eight of those have come since 2000.
Oklahoma men's golf made its 51st appearance in the NCAA Men's Golf Championships last season and was seeded No. 5 overall. OU has two national titles in men's golf, the most recent occurring in 2017, and has reached the quarterfinal round five times since 2016. The Sooners were eliminated by Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals last season. In addition to winning it all in 2017, the OU was national runner-up in 2021.
The Sooner baseball team, which is getting set to begin an all new season in a couple of weeks, finished last season with a 38-22 record and advanced for the fourth straight year to the 2025 NCAA Baseball Championship, where the Sooners were eliminated by North Carolina in the Chapel Hill Regional final. Oklahoma is a two-time national champion in baseball in 1951 and 1994.
Men's basketball had a better season a year ago than this year's team is experiencing so far. The Sooners made it into the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament for the first time in four seasons under head coach Porter Moser. OU, however, lost in the opening round to UConn.
The OU women fared better than the men last season. The Sooners went 27-8 and finished 11th in the final USA Today Coaches Poll for the season. Third-seeded Oklahoma advanced to the Sweet 16 in last season's NCAA Tournament, where the Sooners lost to future national champion UConn, ironically the same school that knocked the OU men out of last year's tournament.
Cross country is not a sport that draws a lot of attention at Oklahoma, but the men's team appeared in its 15th NCAA Championship competition, finishing 15th overall out of a field of 32 teams.
Oklahoma ranks fifth among the current SEC member schools and 24th nationally with 45 national championships across all sports. Texas leads all SEC schools with 69 national championships, while Arkansas and LSU both have a total of 53, and Florida has 49. Georgia (45), Auburn (30) Alabama (28), Tennessee (24), and Texas A&M (23) round out the top 10.
Five SEC teams, including the Sooners, produced a national championship program this past calendar year, including Oklahoma (women's gymnastics), Florida (men's basketball), Texas (men's swimming and diving), Georgia (women's outdoor track and field) and Texas A&M (women's volleyball).
Five of the nine sanctioned Oklahoma men's sports have two or more national championships on record, while two of 10 OU women's sports programs own multiple team national titles between them. More than half of the Sooners' 45 national championships (26) have been won since 2000.
The 2025 calendar year was another strong season at the championship level for Oklahoma athletic programs. The Sooners only managed to collect one national championship trophy, but when you stop to consider there are as many as 260 NCAA Division-I schools that don't have even one national championship in their history, you can understand why Sooner Nation should be proud of the competitive nature and level of achievement of the University of Oklahoma athletic programs.
