Viral John Mateer injury update

A recent post on a message board on a site that covers Texas A&M went viral and created hope among Sooner Nation that Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer will be back from a throwing hand injury in time to play Texas in the Red River Rivalry on Oct. 11.

According to the post from the user "OklahomaSooner Ag," Mateer was at Chipotle in Norman on Monday night when a restaurant worked asked Mateer about his hand injury. Mateer, according to the post, said that he is "100% going to play vs Texas" on Oct. 11.

After the post went viral on X and was even mentioned on local sports talk radio, the "tortilla presser" gained fame among Sooner Nation. Another account on X then responded that their son was the aforementioned "tortilla presser" and included a picture of Mateer with a Chipotle worker.

The most recent reliable update on Mateer came from CBS Sports' Matt Zenits, who said last week, "there seems to be at least an outside chance" that Mateer will play against Texas. Other than that, OU head coach Brent Venables has been hush about Mateer's timeline.

OU's newest 5-star commit

After committing to the Sooners last week, Bixby offensive lineman Kaeden Penny was just upgraded from a four-star recruit to a five-stars, according to the 247Sports Composite.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Penny also went from being the No. 45 overall prospect in the 2027 class to the No. 27. He's still the second-best recruit in the state of Oklahoma behind Fort Gibson's Cooper Hackett, who also committed to the Sooners last week just minutes before Penny, now giving OU two five-star commits already in its 2027 class.

Sooners' NFL QB factory

With Dillon Gabriel starting for the Cleveland Browns this week, unless the player is still in college, every QB1 for the Sooners since 2015 is now starting in the NFL, with six in Week 5. That includes Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts, Spencer Rattler, Caleb Williams and Gabriel.

Although not all of them started every game for a season, they were still considered the guy for at least most of a season before transferring elsewhere or moving on to the NFL. Mateer, this season's QB1, has already generated some first-round buzz to possibly continue the Sooners' pipeline to starting in the NFL.
