The dream of many Oklahoma fans is turning into a nightmare.
Auburn star wide receiver Cam Coleman immediately became the dream transfer target among Sooner Nation, and after it looked like the Sooners initially had a real chance at the top player in the Transfer Portal, more reports have revealed that OU is already stumbling in the rat race for Coleman.
Cam Coleman lining up visits that doesn't include Oklahoma
On3's Pete Nakos and Steve Wiltfong on Friday evening revealed a list of five programs battling for Coleman, and apparently the Sooners aren't even in the ring. According to the recruiting insiders, those vying for Coleman are Alabama, Texas, USC, Texas Tech and Texas A&M.
Even worse for OU fans is that among those five programs, it appears the Longhorns are in the best position to land Coleman. According to multiple reports, Coleman is in Texas this weekend for his first visit as a transfer prospect. Multiple college football writers also predicted Texas to get Coleman even before the portal officially opened on Friday.
Saturday Blitz and every other outlet with transfer rankings not only has Coleman as the No. 1 wide receiver in the portal, but top player overall.
Coleman, listed at 6-foot-3, was a consensus five-star recruit in the 2024 class before signing with Auburn, where he immediately became one of the Tigers' best players. As a freshman, Coleman had 37 receptions for 598 yards and eight touchdowns while averaging 16.2 yards a catch. He was named to the On3 True Freshman All-America and SEC All-Freshman teams after the season.
Even with Jackson Arnold as his quarterback most of this season, Coleman still managed to post a team-high 708 receiving yards and five TDs on 56 catches.
The Sooners, though, unlike last year, don't currently have a glaring wide receiver problem and have bigger issues to fix with the portal. There's always the chance OU general manager Jim Nagy didn't think the outrageous price tag for Coleman was worth it when that money could fill multiple other needs. However, if the Sooners aren't looking to grab an elite receiver from the portal, then the importance of retaining Isaiah Sategna III continues to be more and more crucial.
