Oklahoma’s relentless pursuit keeps Sooners in the mix for Texas Tech commit Gideon Gash

Four-star 2027 athlete Gideon Gash might be committed to the Texas Tech Red Raiders, but it’s far from a marriage until signing day, especially with the Oklahoma Sooners looking so enticing.

Gash admitted to Rivals midwest football recruiting analyst Allen Trieu recently that his recruitment is “not totally closed down” despite pledging to Texas Tech in June, and the Sooners are the main ones Gash can’t move on from.

"I’m committed to Texas Tech and loyal to them, but (Oklahoma) is sticking around the picture, and I’m curious how it goes,” Gash told Rivals.

The Sooners have had plenty of reasons to give up on getting Gash, but they apparently want him really bad, and it’s clear to see why.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Gash is the No. 6 athlete in the 2027 class and No. 58 overall player. He’s also the No. 2 prospect in the state of Michigan out of Detroit Catholic Central, where he excels as a cornerback and receiver, and is also returning kicks this season. If he does ultimately end up at Oklahoma, Gash would play corner for Brent Venables.

Last season, Gash totaled 74 tackles, three tackles for loss, nine pass breakups, an interception and a fumble return that he took for a touchdown. He also caught 19 passes for 540 yards and eight touchdowns. He already has a pick-6 this season.

Gash’s length at 6-foot-4 with his proven ability as a receiver would make him dangerous in the Sooners’ future secondary. It’s the type of player Venables has been recruiting to build his secondary. OU commit Bode Sparrow, listed at 6-foot-2, will play safety for the Sooners but could also play receiver at the FBS level as a four-star athlete.

Swiping Gash from Texas Tech also might not even be the toughest obstacle the Sooners have already overcome in his recruitment. He was destined to play for Michigan State, with a Crystal Ball prediction from 247Sports already in as an in-state recruit with two older brothers already playing for the Spartans. His dad, Sam, played at Penn State before a successful NFL career as a fullback, further proving Gash’s exceptional genes and roots in Big Ten country.

Despite the strong ties to Michigan State, the Sooners and several other big-time programs crashed the party over the summer when Gash’s recruitment exploded. He then scheduled official visits during June to Texas Tech, Alabama and Oklahoma, but he made his decision before his trips to OU and Bama. The Sooners, though, still haven’t given up three months later.

OU already has four cornerbacks committed to its 2027 class, including five-star Gabriel Osborne Jr. from nearby Mustang High School.

Between losing Gash once and having plenty of talent already stacked at the position, it’s apparent the Sooners see something really special in him that’s worth an endless pursuit. And if Venables and general manager Jim Nagy want someone bad enough, they usually get him.
