Oklahoma softball completed a weekend sweep of three teams over six games in the home opener at Love's Field. And all weekend long, runs were crossing the plate for the home team at an historic rate.

All six wins were by run rule, as the No. 5 Sooners extended their win streak to eight games and improved to 19-2 on the season. But that wasn't the big news. Oklahoma scored a massive 116 runs on 92 hits, an average of 19.3 runs per game, and crushed an astounding 30 home runs in the six games.

OU took three games from Alabama State, outscoring the Hornets out of the Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC) 84-9. The Sooners won a pair from Sam Houston State 13-3 and 10-2, and defeated Southeastern Louisiana 9-1 in a single game on Sunday, the lowest-scoring contest of the weekend. Five home runs accounted for eight of OU's nine runs on Sunday.

Sooners go 6-0 at Love's Field while scoring at record pace

The Sooners were already on a record-setting pace that would smash Division-I college softball records for runs and home runs in a season, and this past weekend's performance only bolstered those chances.

Oklahoma entered the home-opening weekend already leading all of college softball in almost all major team offensive statistical categories, and the numbers and distance between the next closest team only widened after the Sooners' offensive power display over the weekend.

The Sooners averaged 28 runs and a winning margin of 25 runs in three run-rule wins over a massively overmatched Alabama State, including a 21-run inning in one of the games that set a program record and ranks second all-time in NCAA annals. Two different OU players in freshman Lexi McDaniel and senior Abby Dayton hit grand slams in the 21-run inning, tying an NCAA record.

Oklahoma already owned the national record for the second-, third- and fourth-most runs scored in an inning. The previous Sooner best for runs in an inning was 18 against Texas Tech in 2021.

Five different Sooners between Dayton (14), McDaniel (12), Gabbie Garcia (12), Tia Milloy (12) and Chaney Helton (11) drove in 10 or more runs apiece in the six weekend games, and a dozen OU players hit at least one home run, with 10 of the dozen leaving the yard at least twice. Freshman Kendall Wells added to her team- and nation-best 15 home runs with five over the weekend. Garcia and McDaniel slugged four each.

Forty-eight of Oklahoma's 92 hits in the six games were for extra bases and 32.6% of the hit total cleared the fences.

The Sooners hit a collective .544 over the six games, raising their No. 1 nationally team batting average to .465, which is 44 points better than No. 2 Florida at .421. Head coach Patty Gasso's crew has 13 players hitting above .400 through 21 games, including four hitting .500 or better.

In addition to sitting No. 1 in the country in batting average, the 2026 edition of Oklahoma softball ranks No. 1 nationally in total runs (285), runs per game (14.25), home runs (81), on-base percentage (.559) and slugging percentage (.957).

The all-time NCAA Division-I record for home runs in a season is 161, and for runs in a season is 685. Both records were set by the 2021 Oklahoma team. The 2026 Sooners are already halfway to the home-run mark with two-thirds of the season still remaining.

Despite its scorching start producing runs, however, for Oklahoma to eclipse the all-time scoring mark the Sooners would need to average at least 10 runs per game through the remaining schedule. If OU were to continue at its present rate, it would end the season with something close to 850 runs, which would shatter the current record.

For the record, the current high marks for on-base (.490) and slugging percentage (.778) are also held by the 2021 Oklahoma team.

Another positive development from the weekend was the fan attendance at 3-year-old Love's Field. The reported attendance for the four days was 15,732, or an average of nearly 4,000 per day.
