Oklahoma fans dealt unexpected football scheduling curveball before opener

There's more good than bad here with this schedule change.

College football season in Oklahoma is actually closer than we thought.

OU announced on Monday that its 2026 season opener against the UTEP Miners was moved from Saturday to Friday night on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. CT at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Despite the move to Friday night with less contests happening, the game still will not be on a major network. Instead, it will be streamed on SEC Network+, but that actually made the biggest benefit possible.

Although many fans were frustrated with the change, there are pros to kicking off on Friday night, but athletic director Roger Denny specifically mentioned a (likely) hot Oklahoma summer day as the key reason behind the move.

"Moving our home opener against UTEP to Friday night presents a unique opportunity to showcase Oklahoma Football," Denny said in a statement. "The game will be streamed digitally, which allows us to be more intentional about selecting a date and kickoff time.

"Historically, early-season games in Oklahoma can present significant heat challenges, and a Friday night kickoff provides a more comfortable environment for our student-athletes, fans and game-day staff. It also allows our fans to enjoy an electric atmosphere in Norman while making the most of the remainder of Labor Day weekend. We're excited to welcome Sooner Nation back to Owen Field for a rare Friday night game under the lights."

Pros outweigh the cons with Sooners' kickoff change vs. UTEP

We had been wondering why it was taking so long for the season opener's kickoff time to be announced after the other two nonconference matchups had been known for some time, so now that delay makes sense.

This announcement rounded out the Sooners' non-conference calendar. It had already been revealed several weeks before that Oklahoma's road game at Michigan Week 2 on Sept. 12 will be at 11 a.m. CT thanks to FOX's Big Noon Kickoff slot. The Sooners will then return to Norman the next week to host New Mexico at 6:30 p.m. CT Sept. 19.

That early kick against Michigan as the Sooners' biggest non-conference matchup also influenced OU to push the season opener back a day, per Sooner Scoop's George Stoia. Although it doesn't seem like much, the Sooners will now get an extra 24 hours before traveling to Ann Arbor. Obviously they don't need any more time to prepare for UTEP, which went 2-10 last season, especially coming right off a long offseason.

That Week 1 matchup will serve as a get-right game to knock off the rust before getting playing time for young players, especially with no longer having to worry about managing redshirts because of the new 5-in-5 rule.

It also gives OU fans a whole extra day of college football. After watching the Sooners annihilate UTEP in a game that will be over by halftime the night before, we get the entire Saturday of Week 1 to enjoy college football without navigating around the Sooners' cupcake matchup.

The loudest noise surrounding the change was negative, though. The glaring issue is that the college football game will now interfere with high school football across the state, considering many of those fans in the stands (and players on the field) on Friday nights are part of Sooner Nation.

That also means the Sooners won't be able to host as many recruits that week since most of them will be playing at that time. More than likely, though, UTEP being in town probably wasn't going to be a massive recruiting weekend anyway.

However, considering it's still June when the announcement was made, that gives plenty of time for high schools in the Sooner State to also adjust their schedules. When the Sooners also opened their season on a Friday night in 2024, many high school football games in the area were moved to Thursday.

That would give Oklahomans three straight days of football after eight months without it in the state.
