Michigan just dragged Oklahoma into the worst part of Big Ten football

This blue-blood matchup won't be the same in Big Ten country.

When the Oklahoma Sooners and Michigan Wolverines had their blue-blood clash last year in Norman, it had the biggest stage and literally had the spotlight under the lights at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, but Round 2 in Ann Arbor this season certainly won't be the same spectacle as OU suffers from the Big Ten's defects thanks to Michigan.

Kickoff between OU and Michigan for their meeting at The Big House was announced on Monday with an early start at 11 a.m. CT Sept. 12 on FOX, which has become the standard window for the Big Ten's marquee game of the week. FOX's pregame show, Big Noon Kickoff, will be in Ann Arbor for the Sooners' first time being featured on that program since they moved from the Big 12 to the SEC to escape these miserable kick times and lackluster environments.

Even worse, this also likely means both team's biggest rival gets primetime that week when Texas hosts Ohio State, and since it's in Austin in SEC country, that game means more.

Oklahoma vs Michigan loses its magic with FOX’s dreaded kickoff slot

When the Sooners and Wolverines met Week 2 of the 2025 college football season in Norman, the clash garnered the primetime slot on ABC and was the most-watched game of the week with 9.7 million viewers.

ESPN College GameDay was also on campus that morning with OU basketball legend and NBA All-Star Trae Young as the guest pick to represent the Sooners. About 2.6 million people tuned in just to watch College GameDay with OU's campus in the background, which will dwarf any viewership for Big Noon Kickoff. However, having the Sooners involved will definitely boost the program that week.

The build-up from bright and early that morning to a game that night created an atmosphere unlike any other as Norman was crowded all day with fans hyping each other up. That ruckus nighttime crowd helped propel the Sooners to a 24-13 win that set the tone early for a 10-2 regular-season record and College Football Playoff appearance.

The historical matchup between two college football blue bloods got what it deserved in Norman.

In Ann Arbor, though, there won't be any of that as one of the the biggest games of the week will be the opening act. Michigan fans and the Wolverines suffer the most, though.

FanDuel already opened the Sooners as 2.5-point underdogs against Michigan in April. Oddsmakers likely liked the Wolverines' chances the most because of their home-field advantage. It will still be there with 107,601 fans at The Big House, but that sleepy crowd that will inevitably funnel in late and won't compare to what the Sooners got at Memorial Stadium.

That aspect of the early kick certainly benefits the Sooners, but there's still nothing comparable to a big-time college football matchup under the dark sky and bright lights after fans had an entire day to get rowdy. It would also help prepare the Sooners for what's to come when every SEC crowd will be more hostile.

OU fans, thankfully, get more of that now in the SEC, but at least for Week 2 of 2026, it will be like a throwback to the Big 12 to watch a game seeming to lack the same significance thanks to Michigan dragging the Sooners down to their Big Ten secondary level that nearly all college football football fans agree to hate.
