Oklahoma 2028 class on verge of topping even the Sooners' top-5 2027 start

Things have been quiet for the Oklahoma Sooners on the recruiting trail the past few weeks, but not for much longer.

Rivals national recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman on Wednesday logged not just one but two Crystal Ball Predictions for the Sooners to soon land a pair of 2028 four-star targets in athlete Kamieon Compton-Nero and running back Jayshawn Mitchell. Those predictions coming true would give OU three commits total already in its 2028 class early in the cycle.

Compton-Nero has felt destined to be a Sooner for some time now as a local product from Owasso. He just transferred across town and made the jump to Class 6A at Owasso High School after spending his first two years at Rejoice Christian.

The Sooners have been after him since last summer and he's already taken five short trips to Norman for unofficial visits. He's also attracted offers from Arkansas, BYU, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Missouri, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Oregon, SMU, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and more. He's expected to cut that list down to at least 10 by the end of July.

Compton-Nero is a freak athlete with the talent to play both quarterback and defensive back at the college level but is expected to line up at safety in Brent Venables' defense. He's also a heck of a basketball player.

Last season as a sophomore at Rejoice Christian, he totalled 3,335 yards and 49 touchdowns as the Eagles won a second straight state title. Defensively, he posted 95 tackles and five interceptions, three of which he returned to the end zone.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Compton-Nero, listed at 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, is the best player the state of Oklahoma has to offer from the 2028 class as the No. 49 prospect in the country. He's also a Navy All-American.

Unlike Compton-Nero, Mitchell is a newer target for the Sooners after they extended an offer just last month when he impressed during a camp. His recruitment has recently exploded after not even getting his first Power 4 offer until April from Purdue. His list now also includes Baylor, Cal, Kansas State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, SMU, Syracuse, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, UCLA, Wisconsin and more.

Mitchell did a little bit of everything for San Antonio Brennan High School in Texas last season while being the secondary back. He rushed for 255 yards and two scores on just 31 attempts while also catching 28 passes for 474 yards and eight TDs. That led to not garnering much interest until the camp circuit, but he should climb up recruiting rankings with a larger role this season. For now, he's still the No. 18 running back in the class, per the 247Sports Composite.

If both Compton-Nero and Mitchell commit to Oklahoma before the end of the month, the Sooners will be off to an even quicker start than they were with their 2027 class that's consistently been in the top five in college football. That group didn't even get a locked in commit until August last summer, and no disrespect to Luke Wilson, but even that first addition was only a three-star offensive tackle.

So far, the Sooners have a pledge from four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri, who was briefly committed to Notre Dame first. Oklahoma is on track to start its 2028 class with a trio of four-star commits to build from.
