This commitment might not come soon after all.

It felt like local 2028 four-star athlete Kamieon Compton-Nero could decide to be a Sooner any day, but he basically let Oklahoma fans know over the weekend, “Not so fast.”

Compton-Nero on Friday released a top 15 of college options, revealing that his final decision is still far from being made with a lot of narrowing down still left to do before ultimately signing next December. OU was included on the lengthy list of those still in the running for Compton-Nero, as well as Oklahoma State, LSU, Missouri, Florida, Oregon, Michigan, Alabama, Texas A&M, SMU, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Texas Tech, Kansas State and Tennessee.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Compton-Nero is the top athlete in the 2028 class as the No. 48 overall player. That also puts him as the best prospect out of the state of Oklahoma from Owasso. He just transferred to Owasso High School from Rejoice Christian School ahead of his junior campaign.

Last season while playing both quarterback and defensive back as a sophomore for Rejoice Christian, Compton-Nero totaled 3,335 yards of offense and 49 touchdowns as the Eagles won their second state championship in a row. Defensively, he recorded 95 tackles and five interceptions, three of which he returned for a score. He would likely play safety for the Sooners.

Oklahoma still the favorite to land Kamieon Compton-Nero

The Sooners have officially been after Compton-Nero since an offer last summer. He has since taken five short trips to Norman for unofficial visits, per Rivals. The next most is Ole Miss with four.

That early belief and mutual interest, plus the obvious local ties, had the Sooners as the early favorites to keep Compton-Nero in the Sooner State and they still are projected to land him with an 82.8% chance on Rivals. National recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman just two weeks ago also logged a Crystal Ball Prediction for OU to get Compton-Nero.

Between the recent prediction and early interest, especially with Compton-Nero being an in-state recruit, it seemed like he would be part of the Sooners’ 2028 class sooner than later. So far, Oklahoma’s only 2028 commit is four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri.

Compton-Nero’s latest update, though, shows that he’s going to do all of his due diligence in the recruitment process, which likely means multiple game-day visits to various programs throughout the 2026 college football season. No one can blame a kid, though, for being sure about such a massive decision, and maybe getting things confirmed now lessens the chances of him one day entering the transfer portal.

Regardless, there still shouldn’t be any worry about Compton-Nero ultimately being a Sooner one day. It might just mean more patience now.
