Throughout a long tradition, Oklahoma quarterbacks have accomplished enough to deem OU as QBU, but there's still one feat that has always evaded the Sooners, but maybe not after Sunday.
Former OU quarterback Jalen Hurts will lead the Philadelphia Eagles against the two-time defending champions Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX at 5:30 p.m. CT Sunday in New Orleans. A win will halt and make a lot of history, including for the Sooners back in Norman.
Hoisting the Lombardi Trophy on Sunday would make Hurts the first quarterback to actually finish his career at OU to win the Super Bowl. There are some gray areas and two particular loopholes for this historical milestone, though.
NFL Hall of Famer Troy Aikman won three Super Bowl championships as the Dallas Cowboys' quarterback. Aikman started his college career at OU, but after losing his starting job after an injury, Aikman transferred to UCLA and went on to become a legend.
The Sooners claiming Aikman's success would be like Texas Tech taking credit for Baker Mayfield. Or even Alabama with Hurts. It just doesn't count, even if who gets to claim who will continue to develop into a hotter topic in the transfer portal era. (see Dillon Gabriel)
There's also another reason more recently that Sooner Nation could claim a Super Bowl-winning former quarterback if it really wanted to.
Blake Bell won three Super Bowls with the Chiefs, including the last two. Bell played tight end for Kansas City, which is also the position he finished his career at with the Sooners. However, Bell went to OU as a five-star quarterback recuit.
Bell was primarily a backup at QB, famous for his Belldozer package, but started eight games at QB as a junior in 2013. Trevor Knight ultimately dethroned Bell as QB1, and before his senior season, Bell converted to tight end.
So with no ifs, ands or buts, Hurts could become the first Sooner to quarterback an NFL team to a Super Bowl championship on Sunday if he gets revenge over the Chiefs, who beat Hurts the first time he led the Eagles to the Super Bowl two years ago.
