The high expectations for new Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer are extending beyond Sooner Nation.
Andy Staples of On3 on Wednesday released a list of his top-10 quarterbacks for the 2025 college football season and included Mateer in the group at No. 6.
Staples' top five ahead of Mateer included Florida's D.J. Lagway, South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers, Clemson's Cade Klubnik and Texas' Arch Manning, respectively. Mateer and the Sooners will go head-to-head against Sellers and Manning this season in SEC play.

Andy Staples of On3 lists Sooners QB among top-10 quarterbacks in college football
This will be Mateer's first season at OU after following his offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle, and transferring from Washington State this offseason. Mateer was the No. 1 player available in the transfer portal when he committed.
Mateer has already played one season under Arbuckle as Washington State's QB1. Last year as a sophomore, Mateer led FBS with 44 total touchdowns. He threw for 3,139 yards and 29 TDs, while rushing for 826 yards and 15 scores.
Arbuckle and Mateer will now have to endure a much tougher schedule through the SEC, plus a nonconference game against Michigan, but at OU, both will have more weapons to work with.
Despite the new scenery and just one season of success, Mateer already has extremely high expectations as the new face of the Sooners and even had Heisman Trophy odds within days of transferring to OU.
On the same day Staples released his list of top-10 overall quarterbacks, CBS Sports and 247Sports' Bud Elliott also released a ranking of best returning quarterbacks who started last season.
Once again, Mateer made the cut, this time at No. 10. Elliott's top-5 QBs included Lagway at the top again, followed by LSU's Garrett Nussmeier, Penn State's Drew Allar, Baylor's Sawyer Robertson and Klubnik, respectively. Sellers was also on this list at No. 6.
