Oklahoma football: Spring transfer portal update – Sooners’ who have left entered the portal
By Brandon Self
Spring Transfer Portal Closed
The NCAA’s transfer portal closed on Sunday, April 30, 2023. This means players who wished to enter the portal for a possible transfer had to do so before the portal’s closing on Sunday. Those players who have entered their names into the portal are eligible to be recruited and signed into another program and will retain their full eligibility.
How the Portal Works
The NCAA’s transfer portal is a private list of student-athletes who wish to explore transfer options at other institutions. The general public cannot access the official list of portal names; however, players commonly offer that information to the public to increase their likelihood of being picked up somewhere or creating social media attention.
A player must make written notification of their intent to transfer into the portal through their universities compliance office. Typically the compliance officer will have the player’s name entered into the portal within 24-48 hours following official written notification.
Three essential aspects of the portal:
- Once a player has officially entered the portal, any school can contact them to recruit them. The player can transfer to a new school or remain at their current school by withdrawing their name.
- This is big. Once a player enters the portal, their original school DOES NOT have to honor their scholarship. If you plan to enter the portal, you’d better be confident you will find a new home because your original school can move on from you just as quickly as you were prepared to move on from them.
- Once the portal closes, you can’t enter your name again until the next window date opens. However, once you are in the portal, you can be recruited and signed past closure dates. Basically, the only thing pertaining to portal dates is entry, not withdrawal.
Oklahoma Sooner Spring Portal Entries
The following list contains the names of the Oklahoma football program’s players who have self-reported to have entered the NCAA Spring transfer portal.
Kori Roberson – Defensive End
Kori Roberson entered the portal on April 17, 2023, and will have 1 year of collegiate eligibility remaining in his career. Roberson was the 1st Spring transfer portal entry for the Sooners. During his career in Norman, Roberson appeared in 26 games, recording 29 total tackles and 1.5 sacks. Roberson’s last game action was in 2021 in the Alamo Bowl against Oregon. He did not play in 2022. The Houston native was a composite 3-star recruit in high school at Marvel high school.
Jaden Davis – Cornerback
Jaden Davis entered the portal on April 18, 2023, and didn’t stay long. Jaden announced on May 1 that he had officially transferred to the University of Miami. Jaden came to Norman as a composite 4-star safety from the prestigious St. Thomas Aquinas high school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Jaden spent four years in Norman and appeared in 47 games. He registered 22 starts for the Sooners but never started an entire season. In 2022, Jaden started in the Sooners’ first nine games before being injured. In Norman, Jaden had 103 total tackles, 1 interception, and 10 pass breakups.
With the high-level play of returner Woodi Washington and youngster Gentry Williams, Jaden saw his opportunity to start for the Sooners shrink more and more each week. Freshman Jasaih Wagoner also had arguably the most impressive Spring of any Sooner. Jaden knew his opportunity to start was elsewhere, and I can’t say he was wrong. Jaden will have a chance to make an impact for the Hurricanes. He should be able to step in and work his way into a starting spot. We wish Jaden well in Miami. I’m happy he found a new opportunity.
Damond Harmon – Safety
Damond Harmon entered the portal on April 28, 2023. He was a highly rated 4-star composite recruit from Highland Spring high school in Virginia. Damond appeared in 18 games over two seasons for the Sooners, starting in two of those contests. Over those two seasons, Damond accumulated 22 total tackles.
The safety room in Norman is deep and getting deeper. Billy Bowman owns one safety position, and Reggie Pearson should start the season at the other. Freshman sensation Peyton Bowen looks like the likely primary backup/eventual starter opposite Bowman in the Sooners’ defensive backfield. The remainder of the room’s safety depth is also effective and productive. There simply wasn’t enough room for Damond Harmon. I’m confident Harmon will find a new division one home to play football in. I wish him well.
Jamarrien Burt – Safety
Jamarrien Burt entered the portal on April 29, 2023 as well. He has four years of eligibility remaining in his collegiate career. Burt came to Norman as a composite 3-star recruit from Forest high school in Ocala, Florida. Burt played against West Virginia, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech on special teams, registering one tackle.
Cullen Montgomery – Offensive Tackle
Cullen Montgomery (75; left above) entered the portal on April 30, 2023. He will have three years of collegiate eligibility remaining. Montgomery was a composite 3-star recruit from Episcopal high school in Bellaire, Texas. Montgomery redshirted in 2022 and did not see any game action. Walter Rouse, Tyler Guyton, Jacob Sexton, and Cayden Green are the Sooners’ offensive tackles on the roster who will see the field this season. That’s an impressive group of tackles that Montgomery could not beat for a two-deep position. Like the others, I wish him well in finding a new home.
In the same way, players leave via the portal, so to do they arrive in Norman. The Sooners brought in former Texas receiver Brenen Thompson via the portal this Spring. They also brought several players in the Winter portal window, including probable starters Dasan McCollough, Austin Stogner, Reggie Pearson, Walter Rouse, and Rondell Bothroyd.
