Oklahoma football: Offensive recruiting update for Spring Game week

Quarterback recruiting update
The Sooners’ 2023 quarterback situation is excellent. On April 8, the Brent Venables staff secured the commitment of 4-star quarterback Michael Hawkins of McKinney, TX (Frisco Emmerson). Hawkins has been one of the Sooners’ most sought-after targets, and many feel the quarterback will bring additional commitments with him in the future. Hawkins will come to Norman and compete with former 5-star quarterback Jackson Arnold for playing time. You can always have a few extra top-tiered quarterbacks in today’s transfer portal age.
The Sooners are also in good standing to compete for the signatures of two other top-rated quarterbacks in the 2024 class. Philadelphia, PA QB Samaj Jones (St. Joseph’s Prep) has the Sooners in his top-two along with Big 12 newcomer Cincinnati. Jones is a composite 4-star quarterback who brings a ton of athleticism and speed to the position. Michael Van Buren is another Northeastern-based QB with the Sooners near the top of his list. Van Buren is a 4-star QB from Baltimore, MD (St. Francis Academy).
The Sooners are expected to attempt to sign a two-quarterback class led by Hawkins. As we mentioned earlier, in today’s NIL/transfer portal age, it never hurts to ‘over-recruit’ a position group. Hawkins is expected to be the prize of the quarterback class, especially with his upcoming senior season, which we feel will lead to an eventual 5th star. However, Van Buren and Jones would be welcome additions to the Sooners 2024 recruiting class as well.
