Oklahoma football: Ranking the top seven linebackers in school history
By Aaron Gelvin
No. 7 — Torrance Marshall
Torrance Marshall was the MVP of the 2001 Orange Bowl in Oklahoma’s 13-2 win over Florida State , which completed the Sooners undefeated 2000 season and the school’s most recent national championship in just the second season under Bob Stoops.
Marshall famously had some words to say at the pregame coin toss to Chris Weinke, the winner of the 2000 Heisman Trophy and the quarterback of the Seminoles. Weinke beat out Josh Heupel for the award that year, and Marshall wanted Weinke to know who he thought should have gone home with the trophy. Marshall and the Sooner defense led by Brent Venables proceeded to shut down the Florida State offense in the victory.
Marshall’s stats don’t jump off the page at you, but he was a captain and a leader on that 2000 defense that absolutely manhandled teams. He also had a knack for making big-time plays in big moments. That’s why jersey No. 10 comes in at No. 7 on this list.
