No. 8 — Oklahoma Sooners team

2017

Record: 12-2 overall (8-1 Big 12)

Head Coach: Lincoln Riley

The 2017 Oklahoma Sooners are unique in the fact that they featured maybe the best offense college football has ever seen and one of the worst defenses college football has ever seen, all in one team.

Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield was the heart and soul of the program during this season (his last in a Sooner uniform). A loss against Iowa State in early October couldn’t keep OU from winning the Big 12, as the Sooners knocked off Oklahoma State and TCU (twice) down the stretch.

The offense around Mayfield featured stars like Mark Andrews, Marquise Brown, CeeDee Lamb and Rodney Anderson. The Sooners led the country in total yards, yards per game and total points. They made the College Football Playoff and fell in an instant classic in the Rose Bowl against Georgia in double overtime. A win in that game would have set up a showdown against Alabama for a national championship.
