No. 7 — 1950 Oklahoma Sooners team
1950
Record: 10-1 overall (6-0 Big 7) National Champions
Head Coach: Bud Wilkinson
Oklahoma’s very first national championship in football was won by the 1950 team led by Bud Wilkinson. They had classic battles with Texas A&M, Texas and Nebraska, winning all three matchups. Billy Vessels was named all-conference as a sophomore, two years before he would win the Heisman Trophy.
The Sooners were named consensus national champs before being upset in the Sugar Bowl against Kentucky, losing by a score of 13-7. Still, Wilkinson’s fourth season at the helm resulted in a title with bigger and better things on the horizon.
This was the era of Oklahoma football that put the Sooners on the national map.
