Oklahoma football: 8 reactions from a Rose Bowl romp
The offensive line took a step forward
The Sooners weren’t perfect up front, but they took yet another step in the right direction in against UCLA. The Sooners cut way back on drive-killing holding penalties and had fewer breakdowns in communication, keeping the pocket mostly clean for Jalen Hurts and road grating their way to 300 yards on the ground.
Having Tyrese Robinson back certainly helped as OU was able to return to their normal, stable lineup up front, but everyone played more in step than they have in the previous two games as we saw the OU counter run really start to take over the game at times. There are still rough spots, but this group had its best game so far against the best front seven they have seen to this point. That’s a good thing.
Charelson Rambo continues to get better
The redshirt sophomore receiver’s role in the offense continues to grow week by week after a five-catch, 116-yard and two touchdown game against UCLA. He was the team’s leader in receptions, yards and scores.
Rambo might not be quite as fast as Marquise Brown was last year, but the difference might not matter because he has been faster than anyone covering him so far this season. he also showed an ability to improvise with his quarterback, breaking off his route and crossing the field to help out a scrambling Hurts. He was rewarded with a 48-yard touchdown reception. The younger receivers are still going to nip at his heels, but it looks like Rambo has earned the lion’s share of the reps on the outside opposite CeeDee Lamb for the immediate future at least.
