Once again, Oklahoma fans are wanting OU men's basketball coach Porter Moser fired, but that comes with a price.

The Sooners are on a three-game losing streak early on in SEC play after getting blown out by No. 19 Florida 96-79 on Tuesday night at Lloyd Noble Center. The loss dropped OU to 1-3 in SEC play and to second-to-last in conference standings. The Sooners are 11-6 overall after a solid run through their nonconference slate.

A look at Moser's contract details as fans want change

Success during the nonconference schedule has lost meaning for OU fans, though, because it almost never amounts to anything meaningful with Moser in charge. In his fifth season, Moser has never guided the Sooners to a winning record in conference play between both the SEC and Big 12. Last season was the first time Moser even got OU into the NCAA Tournament, but the Sooners still had a 6-12 SEC record.

The consistent disappointment is why OU fans are already once again questioning how much it would cost the Sooners to move on from Moser and find a new head coach.

Oklahoma has yet to release Moser's contract details for 2026, so his exact buyout is still unknown. Last year, the university released those numbers in mid-March, right as the Sooners were in the midst of a four-game losing streak, and the buyout was actually steeper than what most expected at $7.65 million. In 2025, Moser's salary was $3.2 million. He also gets a $200,000 bonus for staying in Norman as OU's coach.

However, with no new known extension signed, that buyout number will be smaller to fire Moser this year. On average during Moser's contract, his buyout has decreased by about $2 million each year, so fans can estimate it likely taking between $5-$6 million to fire Moser in 2026.

As much as fans beg, though, it ultimately comes down to if athletic director Joe Castiglione and the rest of OU's administration thinks the amount is worth moving on, plus the cost of likely needing to buy out the contract for whoever they would hire as Moser's replacement. Regardless, with no lottery pick to save Moser this year, the Sooners should start budgeting now for whatever it takes to get a new basketball coach.
