The team morale for Oklahoma softball is quite high right now, as the Sooners put on a show in the Norman Regional, outscoring opponents 28-1 in the three-game winning streak. Michigan saw up close that the Sooners are one of the best teams in the country, arguably No. 1 on the list.
Patty Gasso sends strong Oklahoma message Mississippi State better be ready for
Well, the oddsmakers over at FanDuel seem to think Oklahoma is No. 1 at least. That's because the updated Women's College World Series odds just dropped and the Sooners have been placed at +280, which stands alone at the top. Texas holds the second-best odds at +500. Is this Vegas' way of telling us that the Sooners are ready to push for a national title? We think so.
Oklahoma softball holds the best WCWS odds with the Super Regional up next
It wasn't that long ago that Oklahoma fans were ready to hit the panic button when a loss to Georgia was posted in the SEC Tournament. It had some people fearing the worst in terms of an early exit in the main tournament. However, the Sooners calmed plenty of nerves out there with the recent performances in Norman.
Now, though, Mississippi State is up next, with a three-game series coming at Love's Field. Gasso and her players are feeling quite confident about things, which was highlighted after the win against Michigan. The players barely celebrated. Why was that? Because they expected to put on a strong, dominant performance.
"It's special. It's pretty amazing, too," Gasso said in her postgame presser after taking down the Wolverines. "I don't know, maybe not amazing, but the expectations of this program is, thank you, Michigan. And we're moving on without any kind of celebration. They're almost kind of embarrassed to celebrate. I don't know how to explain it, but it's our expectation, so we just keep moving on. I thought we played really well this weekend. Pitchers were amazing. I think maybe could be wrong, but something like six hits over three games, really great job. I thought everybody played well. I thought we started to run out of gas a little bit the end of this game, but for the most part, everything was right on key."
Oklahoma will now be playing with that same swagger against the Bulldogs, a conference foe that the Sooners are yet to face off against this season. The hope and expectation is that Oklahoma will cruise to a series win and punch its ticket to the 2026 Women's College World Series.
Should that end up being the case, it will mark the 10th consecutive season in which the Sooners get that job done. Leading up to things, the expectation is that Gasso and Co. will keep playing at a high level and push for a ring. The +280 odds are pretty darn head-turning. Is it too early for the Oklahoma faithful to start thinking about this group winning it all this spring? Not at all, as OU certainly has what it takes to pull things off.
