The Oklahoma Sooners have one commit so far from the 2028 recruiting class, and he's a dang good one, but Micah Rhodes ever actually wearing crimson and cream is still far from a for-sure thing.

Rhodes pledged to the Sooners on Jan. 29 as one of the top running backs in the class during a star-studded appearance on Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson's podcast, "Night Cap." However, just two weeks later, OU running backs coach DeMarco Murray took a new job with the Kansas City Chiefs, and although Rhodes is still committed to the Sooners, it's clear the commitment is far from a marriage.

DeMarco Murray's departure has Oklahoma in danger of losing top 2028 recruit Micah Rhodes

Rivals' Parker Thune reported on Saturday that Rhodes plans to still visit other schools during his recruitment process, mostly because of Murray's departure.

"People say, ‘You’re committed; you can’t be going to other schools,’" Rhodes told Thune. "... My coach just left -- the coach that I wanted to play for."

Fans can't blame Rhodes for looking at other options after the man he committed to left before being replaced by Deland McCullough, who was a great hire, but still not who built the relationship with Rhodes. Rhodes even admitted during his commitment that Murray was one of the biggest reasons for his decision.

"The biggest thing is they made it feel like I was family," Rhodes said then. "Every visit I went on, they made me a priority. I mean, Coach DeMarco believed in me early. He offered me in eighth grade and that meant a lot to me."

Rhodes also congratulated Murray on the career move via social media, but also made it known he was upset about the news.

The plus side for the Sooners is that Murray went to the NFL, so he can't lure Rhodes away with him. There will still be plenty of others for the Sooners to fight off, though.

Rhodes had narrowed his options and chose OU over in-state Texas and Texas A&M. He also holds offers from Alabama, Florida State, Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Oregon and more.

Rhodes is the top running back in the 2028 class, according to 247Sports. He's also the No. 28 national prospect and No. 2 player in the state of Texas out of Klein Oak High School.

With still two high school seasons left to play and not even being able to sign until Dec. 2027, Rhodes still has a long ways to go before having to officially settle on a decision, which makes for a long marathon before the Sooners get to the finish line.
