Ranking Oklahoma's 5 most likely breakout candidates at wide receiver

Who will impress most in 2026?
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

The Oklahoma Sooners are expected to have the best group of wide receivers of the Brent Venables era in 2026, which really isn't saying much, but in order for that to come true, a few players will have to exceed expectations this season.

Isaiah Sategna III is back after leading the Sooners in receiving in 2025 and should again be one of quarterback John Mateer's favorite targets this season. They also added Trell Harris, who was a Third-Team All-ACC selection with Virginia last year before transferring. But it's those underrated guys who put together breakout seasons that can really take the Sooners' receivers to the next level.

Between newcomers and reserves waiting their turn, there's a list of OU receivers poised for a breakout season in 2026, but who's most likely to impress in 2026?

Sooners receivers poised to surprise in 2026

There was a lot of buzz during spring camp about Jahsiear Rogers even getting playing time in the backfield. He then led all receivers in OU's spring game with five catches for 70 yards.

Despite the obvious talent as a former four-star recruit and a great first impression, though, offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle revealed last season it's hard for a freshman receiver to see the field in his offense, so Rogers will still likely get minimal opportunity to really explode. That's why he's the only frosh on this list and also buried beneath upperclassmen.

Last year was supposed to be Jer'Michael Carter's breakout season after transferring from McNeese, but then he totaled just nine receptions for 101 yards while appearing in every game. The jump to the SEC obviously slowed Carter down, but now only Sategna has built up more in-game chemistry with quarterback John Mateer than him.

That trust as a senior with both Mateer and Arbuckle will result in more opportunities for Carter to take advantage of in 2026.

OU fans have been chomping at the bit for Elijah Thomas to show out since he signed with the 2025 class as a consensus four-star prospect out of in-state Checotah High School. The hype skyrocketed even more last preseason, only for a letdown of a freshman campaign that saw Thomas barely get any playing time and catch only a five-yard pass.

The talent is obviously there with Thomas as a freak athlete, but now we just hope Arbuckle puts him on the field so we can see what all the hype is about.

If not for Mackenzie Alleyne's spring emergence, Elijah Thomas would be here at No. 2. Actually, if not for a breakout spring camp, Alleyne wouldn't be in this ranking at all and completely off everyone's radar.

Alleyne was a quiet transfer addition over the offseason from Washington State, where he walked on in 2024 when Arbuckle was OC and didn't do much last season. However, Arbuckle apparently sees something in Alleyne and we got a glimpse of it during the spring as he turned a lot of heads and caught a touchdown in the spring game.

Parker Livingstone hasn't exactly been under the radar since transferring from Texas, but he will still exceed current expectations, which makes for a breakout season.

Trell Harris from Virginia was the biggest transfer addition at receiver and Sategna is back, so the most common assumption is Livingstone will be at best third in the pecking order. However, don't be surprised if Livingstone is actually the Sooners' best receiver while playing at an All-SEC level to remind the Longhorns what they lost.

Harris and Sategna both have the speed to make big plays, but Livingstone can also blow past secondaries while also having the size at 6-foot-4 to pull down catches. No matter the expectations for Livingstone, he's about to be even better.
